Weapon is NOT the first thing that should come to mind. I say get state of the art security system, big dogs, and some of those cool heavy doors that lock like a safe. But for a weapon I'd say a Glock 21 and a Mossberg 590a1

Yeah, that's good stuff. Corona gets really hot so those heavy steel locking screen doors are great too.So um... moon labia or something.Comment

Well Im kind of in the same boat at the guys above I have 3 different weapons for home defense I have my Ruger SP101 in .357 mag for my nightstand gun but that is with .38 +p of course, then I also have my Ruger SR9C for a back up handgun, and for bigger problems I have the mossberg 590A1, although Id try and use the revolver over any of the other 1s due to the fact that if It was used in a HD situation where some1 was killed say goodbye to your gun, so id use the most replacable first, but its also 1 of my most potent "fight stoppers"Comment

I agree, weapons should not be your only consideration. I have one of the security doors in the front that I bought from Lowes and a pit Bull in the back yard. I keep the SG next to me and the K-Bar in the night stand, the 45 is in the safe room for my wife to use.Comment

A lot of good ideas here. I like these:
1. Heavy duty doors and windows.
2. A dog.
Other than that, how big is the house? How big are the hallways? How many rooms? Who else lives there with you and your wife?
I'd think a simple shotgun with a tactical light would be good. Why? Maybe one night you've had a few too many beers, or maybe you're really groggy/tired, or whatever - aiming after being jolted awake with adrenaline flowing and poor lighting might be easier with a scattergun. Have a pistol handy as well. Having a light ensures you see what you're doing and don't shoot your drunken brother who decided to stop by unannounced (and piss himself on your rug).
If you go with a pistol for HD, I'm mulling over the "defensive" rounds (sorta like buckshot housed in a hollowpoint round) since they won't overpenetrate and go through my neighbor's wall (oops)... not sure if it'd be better for stopping a drugged up psycho, but it's a thought. Anyone have any thoughts on these types of rounds?
For me, I'm stuck with .40SW handguns, but would like a shotty one of these days...Proud atheist. 1. Dog(s) to wake you up and scare off amatuer intruder
2. Favorite handgun next to bed with flashlight to escort you to the safe room.
3. Shotgun/rifle/wife's gun in the saferoom to hold down the fort until the calvary comes
Personally, my wife grew up dove hunting with a Winchester 1300 20 gauge and is very familiar with the action, so a Winchester 1300 Riot/Police 12 gauge is in the saferoom ready to rock. That being said their are other options around the house in case of emergency.

True. It is probably impossible in this day and age to make crime go away but you can make it go somewhere else. However, you cannot know how good your security sytem is until it fails so consider your guns as a backup plan.Politicians and criminals are moral twins separated only by legal fiction.Comment

If you have anything at all you are ahead of the curve. If you have have a Glock and an 870 the curve means nothing to you. If you train with both, constantly, you may just survive. What do you mean my birth certificate expired?Comment

First let me say that in no way am I trying to thread jack here with my question.. I just kinda see it fit with the topic and I would rather not open a new thread.. with that said here it goes..
When it comes to HD weapons how important is placement of these HD weapons to you..?
I have one small very curious son (age 3) and he likes to climb on counters and such so stashing up high is out of the question for me.. and getting to a safe in time and unlocking it during an emergency can be critical to all of our survival.. our home isn't too big single story 3 bed room house and the garage is not attached but not out of reach either.. my wife on the other hand will not go for any of our weapons not being in a lock box or safe.. I on the other hand feel we need atleast 2 weapons spread out in the house and what ever else in our bedroom..
Placement and access is my main issue.. how do some of you guys go about placement..? Do you still keep HD weapons unlocked in these areas..?Glock 17 Gen 3 [X]
Glock 32 Gen 4
Glock 20SF Gen 3 [X]Comment

Teach your kids gun safety, even at that young an age. Other than that, if you leave a gun unlocked, whether it is locked in a room, a box, a safe, or whatever, expect that your children will find it.What do you mean my birth certificate expired?Comment

And don't forget to have the artillery battery fire a few registration rounds.
