Anyone ever send a gun frame via USPS?

As I understand it, USPS won't ship handguns, but have no qualms shipping firearms.

A gun frame counts as just a firearm and not an actual handgun.

I found a discussion of it here:

I was under the impression that it is illegal (or at best against USPS policy) for anyone other than an FFL holder to ship firearms through the mail, regardless of classification.

The only useful result returned by a quick search of the USPS website (search term "firearms") was Form PS1508, Statement by Shippers of Firearms. The statement implies that the addressee must also be an FFL holder.

USPS has a shipping exemption for longguns. Is a handgun frame a longgun? No, it is a handgun frame. I would not ship it but via UPS or FedEx overnight.

I have shipped pistol frames via usps with no problem. Just frame, no guts. Its considered gun parts, not a complete pistol.

No, a finished firearm frame IS a FIREARM, regardless of fire control parts. An 80% frame is not. Unless you're a FFL, you committed a huge no-go.

+1 THE FRAME is the FIREARM.

Incorrect. Long guns can be shipped by a private party to a FFL on the other end. A handgun frame is not a long gun.

Like others have mentioned, a finished handgun frame with a serial number is a firearm IMHO.

Also what nobody has talked about is I'm sure your aware you can only ship it to the factory or an FFL for repair. Other wise it's gotta go FFL to FFL. And the factory or FFL is allowed to ship it directly back to you.

I know USPS is cheaper than FedEx overnight but I wouldn't roll the dice. What if somehow they discover it's a frame and take some kind of action against you ? I'd ship it FedEx Over Night Air.

                Good Luck.

If shipping a firearm vis UPS, Fed Ex or USPS, it may go to any FFL (inclusive of licensed gunsmiths) for repair, modification or sale, to yourself, or to a manufacturer.

You're not just limited to shipping to an FFL or manufacturer for repair.

                    I stand corrected. Thank you.

I shipped a gun to a smith USPS it only cost 13 bucks to ship it to So. Cal and the could of given less of a crap if it was a rifle or not. UPS on the other hand woulda cost 80-90 bucks and they woulda wanted your first born and you had to go to a main branch. That was my experience. USPS all the way.

USPS prohibits handguns by policy and any major part thereof. A frame is a mjor part, hence it's a no go.

That means the nice lady at the USPS knowingly helped me commit a crime

Actually, I take that back. I checked the Domestic Mail Manual again and they removed the "major part thereof" clause. I saw it in there somewhere last time I checked.

                            Here are the current rules:

And that is against postal regs. Had the gun been lost I doubt you would have had any recourse since you should not have been using USPS in the first place.
