for the 1911 owners: mag and magwell suggestions

+1 on the S&A magwell.
I've used the Wilson type before, have two and neither are on a gun right now. I dremeled one set of grips to be used with it and I'm pretty much stuck using those grips with that magwell. I could use them with another but I just get that nagging feeling that the cut is there and there's that hole in the base of the grips. Call me weird, but yeah... I also feel like the S&A is more solid and actually adds some weight over the standard MSH too.
I've found that I like a third option the best. Alumagrips with the added magwell. This magwell ties into cuts in the aluminum grips. The two I have are very solid and have been great. I got the agressive textured grips and they can be a bit much for full power .45 ACP loads. I find if I grip hard, the pads of my fingers on my dominant side hand start to hurt. I think they have a stepped down texture available as well.
I've got the CM mags and use them in competition. I've also got a Wilson with a pistol deal and I've got to say they're a really nice mag. If I had the money to spend again I'd get the Wilsons. For competition action shooting or when you need a 100% reliable magazine the wilsons are hard to beat, but I havn't had any problems that I associate to the CM mags.
If you're just target shooting then pretty much any magazine will work. If you have a jam on the slowfire target line, no big deal, just clear it, extra practice. If you have a jam in a competative environment then that's costing you time and possibly the match. If you're in a situation when the lead's flying both directions then god help you, especially if you have a jam.Last edited by MustangGreg66; 09-21-2010, 3:58 PM.Comment

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

If you are going with an add on magwell, it doesn't get much better than the S&A.
I prefer the McCormick PowerMag and the Wilson ETM...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

I have used a magwell like the one you linked to, a kimber mag well and a S&A magwell. I like the S&A best. They are very easy to install. Being your gun is a springfield you are going to want to change the mainspring housing guts too. Marki just picked up my first 1911. a springfield mc operator. i want to add a magwell, but i dont feel comfortable yet taking the gun apart. i want to know your take on this magwell. also, looking to use 8 round mags, which one? wilson combat 47d's or chip mccormick power mags?Last edited by railroader; 09-22-2010, 7:42 PM.Comment

Like someone else posted, learn to strip your gun. 1911s are one of the easiest, and most interesting to detail strip.
As for the magwell, use one that's integrated with the mainspring housing. Rule of thumb is to shape the part to fit not the gun.Last edited by Mr. Meeseeks; 09-21-2010, 6:02 PM.Comment

Just remember to order the new internal parts for the magwell. I would also go with a 19lb. mainspring instead of the stock 23lb. Makes a slightly lighter trigger. Here's a diagram of a stock 1911. The parts are #23,22,27 and 24. Im not sure but you might be able to use your old #27 and#24. http://www.okiegunsmithshop.com/Colt1911Gov.jpg Markshould of checked youtube first...too easy. gonna order the s&a, thanks for the input.
