for the 1911 owners: mag and magwell suggestions

i just picked up my first 1911. a springfield mc operator. i want to add a magwell, but i dont feel comfortable yet taking the gun apart. i want to know your take on this magwell. also, looking to use 8 round mags, which one? wilson combat 47d's or chip mccormick power mags?
Time to nut up, or shut up.

I've had good experiences with Wildon and Chip McCormick mags, but I use Wilsons.

Don't have any experience with the magwell though, sorry!

on that magwell you need to cut/sand the grips so they still screw in correctly. Get to know your pistol, stip it! Get a real mag well and if you still want, take it to a gunsmith to get it blended.

I would look into the Smith & Alexander magwell, it's a direct 1-piece MSH/magwell replacement. Really quite easy.

To keep it simple I would buy new MSH guts which should consist of 4 parts to replace the ILS in your magwell. There are 3 parts + a pin holding it all together.

        1) ensure gun is unloaded, field strip the gun so the slide is off the frame
        2) Ensure the hammer is forward, guide the hammer with your thumb and finger and pull the trigger. Don't let the hammer slam against the frame.
        3) Use punch to push out the mainspring housing pin.
        4) Use a rubberband to hold down the grip safety (learned this from Kruzr)
        5) slide the MSH down and out of the frame. Take note how the sear spring is orientated. The rubberband on the grip safety holds the hammer strut in plcae as well as the sear spring.
        6) Replace guts into new mainspring
        7) Slide new MSH/magwell over sear spring, ensuring the strut contacts the mainspring
        8) push in MSH pin
        9) Reassemble.

All magwells come unblended to the frame, so you'll see a "step" in your magazine well. You can have it blended by a competent gunsmith if you wish. But, function over form as I say. It does help trememdously in magazine reloads.

You can see the step from the magwell to the frame.

        Good luck!

For your Springfield MC, get Smith & Alexander Mag Well and Chip McCormick Powermag 8 Rd .45ACP. I can install Mag Well.

Yup, go for the S&A magwell. For mags I recommend Powermags, Wilson ETMs, and Tripp Cobramags.

I would go with chip mags! I love mine, and ive got about 5 8 rounders and 2 10 rounders.

                  I got a semi-related question

I was looking to buy these w/ my new 1911 MC operator? Do these stick out quite a bit? or do they just stick out the small amount the plastic base underneath?

I've got the S&A Magwell on mine and removed the ILS. Powermags, Wilsons, Tripps have all worked well for me. Personally I don't like the 10 round magazines. 7 rounders tend to be the most reliable.

I have an unused S&A magwell if anyone is interested. It's blue. Fits all SA 1911s.

They stick out about two rounds worth. I guess, I could measure when I get home. I just moved so may take a while to find them.

The internet is like a 12 step group. Take what you need and leave the rest.

Ah ok, do you know if it extends beyond the plastic bottom? because that would look weird D:
