Ammo questions.....

How many rounds should I get for my 12 gauge?
I would think a case of each would be a good.
250rds bird shot
250rds 00 buck

How many rounds for my 9mm?
1,000rds more than you shoot.

How many rounds for my .357/.38 spl?
Again 1,000rds more than you shoot.

How about a 60/40 split between plinking ammo and full on HD/hunting ammo?

I have about 5k of 9mm and maybe 20 rounds for the 12 gauge. I need to go shopping.

Rifle: I have 5k (3k brass cased and 2k wolf)stocked for 223. I make sure to save at least 1k of brass cased 223 for emergencies. The other 4k gets used for training purposes.
Rifle: I have 2500 rds of steel cased 7.62x39. Save at least 1k rounds for emergencies.

Handgun: I have 2k of Federal 9mm fmj. I would like 3k more. I save 500 rds for emergencies. The rest gets used for plinking and training.

Shotgun: 250 rounds OO-Buck saved for emergencies. I dont shoot it at all.

I would love 10k rounds stock piled for each caliber except for the shotgun but I dont have enough cash. The one thing Im worried about though is that ammo prices might go down which means I over paid and stockpiled for nothing.

Working on having 2k in .40, 2k in .38, and plenty of 22lr and shotgun ammo just for stockpiling for the worst.

Also wanting to stock up a little on everything just for shooting.

The short, wide ammo cans will hold 700 - 800 rounds of .40 each depending on the compactness of the box.

You can get 900 - 950 of .38 into one.

I don't think that's overzealous. .22lr is better than most people credit it for. With a well tuned rifle you can still get pretty dead on accurate at 100 yards while also maintaining a very low noise signature. If you have a suppressor (i know you californians don't get such neat toys), they are literally silent. A .22lr pistol can also be nearly silent and just as lethal as a .45 with correct shot placement and high quality rounds.

Between me and a couple of other guys and their kids we've gone through 1000rds of .22 in a single range outing. The only reason to not stash .22 so rigorously is because it is so available and cheap already.

In a SHTF/EOTWAWKI situation, the 22 rifle or target pistol is the gun most likely to keep you fed.
Rabbits, squirrels, possums, raccoons, even rats and cats.

Everyone should own a .22 and keep at least a "brick" of ammo for it.

It's cheap and compact.

i pick up a box or two of ammo every two weeks for hoarding purposes. i've been doing this for awhile; even if you are operating on a budget, the ammo supply grows over time.

Properly stored ammo will last for a very long time; I've seen 90 yeard old .30-40 Krag being fired before (but the primer was a little slow).

I've shot numerous rounds of Yugo 8x57 that was from the early 1950s still works great. So does my stash of 7.62x54R PPU heavy ball from 1976.

My experience with it was from the early 90's - it was REALLY rough, lots of sharp edges, and was a jam-o-matic. At the time I wanted a PPK, but settled for the knock off. That won't happen again.

Perhaps the newer production is better, but this was my personal experience... were I to own another .380, I'd go with the Sig.

While I firmly believe there is no such thing as too much ammo, in reality, about 500 rds for each gun you plan on using will probably be sufficient.

While you may go thru that much in an afternoon at the range, in a disaster situation you won't be doing a lot of range time and you will be concentrating on staying alive. You won't be blazing away willy-nilly and in the "Red Dawn" scenario, you would be laying low and trying to not draw attention to yourself. Any high volume fire will put you in the land of bad things faster than you want.

Fire control discipline becomes critical to your survival.

When I worked patrol in a very remote area where backup was often in excess of an hour away, I carried 100 rds of .223, 30 rds of .38 Special on my person and another 24 in speedloaders in an emergency bag, 4 rds of OO buck in the shotgun, another 4 + 1 slug on the buttstock, and 6 each of 00 buck and slugs in my emergency bag. When we switched to the 92f, it was 45 rds 9mm on my person, and 4 loaded 15 rd mags in my bag.

This was the same amount I carried with me as a squad leader during the LA riots, plus I had 500 rds of 9mm for my squad.

These ammo amounts were always sufficient.

During my 32 years, I fired a total of 6 rds of .38 SPCL and 4 rds of 00 Buck in field situations.

But like I said, you can never have too much ammo, too many guns, or too many friends with guns.

Store it in a cool, dry place and it will last a LONG time. If you can buy sealed tins for your emergency stuff, that will make sure it lasts. Plus, you will be less tempted to tap into it when you make a last minute range trip.
