    Ammo questions.....

So I know ammo is going to be a pain to get next year, so with that being said if I stock up this year how much is a good amount to buy? and how long can It just sit in my closet before its unsafe to still store or shoot? Also most of the rounds that I would keep would strictly be for a rainy day so to speak they probably wouldnt even be used for the range. How much ammo is to much? I know it sounds corny but if some natural disaster or somthing crazy happens I want to be prepared but not at the expense of my safety. How much ammo do you guys stock up on?

How many rounds should I get for my 12 gauge?

How many rounds for my 9mm?

How many rounds for my .357/.38 spl?

Kind of dumb but I just want to be prepared. Thanks guys

If you store it in a cool, dry place it will last for 100+ years. Buy as much as you feel comfortable with. When your fear of having not enough ammo matches your fear of having too much ammo then you will have reached your ammo equilibrium.

As said above. 50 cal ammo cans are great for storage, especially since in most parts of cali humidity is not an issue AFAIK. A friend of mine feels that about 5000rds of ammo for your primary pistol and about 10,000 rds for your primary rifle. I'm at about half that currently but I shoot entirely more than I should so its hard to maintain a stockpile.

In a true SHTF scenario you'll probably find 9mm easily accessible as it's NATO and most militaries use it, but .357 is probably useless, and 12 gauge is heavy for what you get out of it.

          In another SHTF scenario
One would probably become mobile. Between water and supplies, 500 rounds would be the most practical to carry around.

1K seems like a nice quantity.

With a screen name like yours you should already know But seriously though I would at least start with 500rnds of each.

Where? In a true SHTF scenario, that is.

I believe that standard military calibers should be somewhat easier to find than other ammo. The military will still be supplied when the Chinese drop from the skies and ban all civilian made ammunition. In that case you can beg, borrow, or steal military calibers if you really need to. That's my Red Dawn logic anyway.

Longer than you will be around. Safe condition? They will always be safe. Rounds do not spontaneously become unsafe.

I had some rounds given to me from the mid-70's and it shot perfectly fine.

The amount you keep is up to you. I have several thousand of each caliber I own, and I don't feel it is enough. I like to always keep 1K of each caliber as a stash, and buy more on top of that to shoot.

1 range trip right now, I will blow out 200 of 9mm and 200 5.56 very easily. So 1K of each is only 5 range trips.

In a SHTF situation, I think it comes down to how much you can carry. I have a few hundred rds of 9mm and 400 5.56 in my bug out bag.

A lot of people who store emergency rations rotate them. That is to say that when the food they have stored is about to expire they use it for everyday uses. They then go to the store to replace their emergency stock instead of to shop for groceries if that makes sense. I suppose you could do that with ammo too. Not like ammo will expire though.

Well what I want to do is stock a certain amount of ammo for SHTF situation, and then when I get the urge to go to the range just drive to the gun shop on the way to the range and get how ever many rounds I feel like shooting...I basically want to have the rounds stored at my house for an emergency only and not touch them otherwise. So if I do decide to stock up a couple thousand rounds would there be a need to swap them out occasionally? or would they be fine in my closet?

100,000 rounds for all the above...you have plenty of shopping to do.
