Question for all current/ex-LAPD members...

I know my sister was issued the Beretta 92 FS when she went throught the academy. Since Bratton became chief they have allowed the Glock as well as the S&W line to be carried as well as calibers other than the 9mm....I'm pretty sure the 45 ACP is allowed (whereas before, SWAT was the only one to use it), not sure about the 40 S&W, but am guessing it's ok now as well. She tells me you can upgrade to one of the other approved weapons as long as you're willing to buy the pistol and accessories yourself and go through the additional training. During her time at the academy they didn't want recruits to practice shooting on their own, fearing they'de have to waste time untraining bad habits.

A good friend of mine graduated from the LAPD Academy a couple of years ago. His whole class went out and bought themselves Glock 21's. The even presented them during their graduation ceremonies, so I know the 45 ACP is approved.

i think you can buy any gun on their approved list and you have to quallify
with it(whatever that means)

At least they have some leeway. In the Highway Patrol, it's 4006 on duty, like it or not. If you make it to Lieutenant, or get a cushy plainclothes job like autotheft or ISU, you can get a "Shorty Forty".

The way I heard it, if the Weapons staff at the Academy had had their way back in 1990, every Highway Patrolman (note, Patrolman) would carry a locked and cocked 1911, and slugs in the 870. Not going to happen...these are political decisions, nevermind that the .45ACP is a legendary manstopper, and that most officers can definitely handle one proficiently provided they recieve proper training and practice...."Thou shall not have any other option, Thou shall all be the same, for the sake of ye not able to handle percieved recoil. It's for thy own good. We promise." Yup, sounds like California alright.

Sorry, but not sure if some think that is an urban catch phrase or some form of gang/rap colloquialism, but "Shorty Forty" was the actual name of a special short barreled model 4006 as released by Smith and Wesson, in several incantations. It had a 3.5 inch barrel, and depending on the model or release of it, "Shorty Forty" was either etched on the slide in large letters, or in smaller letters at the base of the front of the frame, similar to their their "Tactical" models.

These were Performance Center guns and are highly sought after, fetch significant prices, and those who own them are very fond of their performance and reliability. VERY accurate for a short barreled gun. Lew Horton, Camfour, and others distributed them. I've seen people mock the reference before, thinking it was a slang term for any short barreled .40S&W. Not so. It really did exist and was an exceptional little gun.

I think there is also a Shorty nine and a Shorty 45 also! I think the Shorty Forty went thru different generation/types also.

IIRC, I believe the CHP issued the model 4013, (I could be wrong, I need to make a phone call) I knew 2 guys that carried them, both loved them compared to the standard 4006.

Regarding the issue of whether to carry the Glock 27 as a backup or the Smith revovler, don't make that decision based on magazine compatibility. I bought a model 27 to carry as a backup. It will fire with a model 22 magazine, but even the lightest pressure on the magazine will cause jams. Frequent jams.

you'd be surprised at how many officers don't know anything about guns.

I already posted something similar in another thread, but this has been my experience too.... Not only not know about guns, but also not know how to handle and shoot them safely. Shooting everything but the target in front of them.

The LAPD had issued Beretta 92FS 9mm handguns, though they had allowed officers to purchase their own Beretta Cougar or S&W 4506, 4566, all in .45 ACP. After Bratton came, he made the change to Glocks, and recruits get a Glock 22 (.40 S&W) issued to them. Once they're out of the academy, they can purchase a G17, 23, 34, 35, 21, etc and qualify with them to be able to carry them on duty.

The only thing your friend will need to buy are a few extra magazines for the G22 and some "snap caps" (inert rounds for skip loading).
