    Question for all current/ex-LAPD members...

    My friend is in the process of becoming a sheriff at the LAPD and as his friend, "armorer" and power of attorney he has asked me to find him a good handgun. My question is, fellow Calguns.net members, what is the standard issue handgun for the LAPD? Apparently, you have to buy your own handgun but it has to be compatible with everyone else's magazines and ammunition.

    Thanks guys!

    They issue, (meaning you dont have to buy) the glock 22

      a sheriff for LAPD?

      a deputy sheriff for LASD or a police officer for LAPD?
      LASD = beretta 9mm
      LAPD = glock 22 .40

      and they issue weapons, so you don't have to buy one unless you want to and it's authorized.
      and you don't have to buy one "that is compatible with everyone's magazines and ammunition."

        Wow so your friend is going to become another officer who knows nothing about guns? I don't mean to make fun of your friend, but I hope he has no aspirations of becoming a detective if this is his pattern for how he investigates a subject.

          you'd be surprised at how many officers don't know anything about guns.

            A friend of mine is about to finish the LAPD academy, and knows very little about guns. He knows I work at a shop and recently asked me if I could hook him up with a Glock 27 as a backup, he was apparently issued a 23. He's also already bought himself a S&W 642 for off-duty carry. Needless to say I intend to make sure he's comfortable and competent with all three as soon as I can get him down in San Diego.

              lots of cops don't know a lot about guns. it's not a requirement, nor should it be. they train you how to shoot in the academy.

              you should tell your friend to carry the 642 as a backup and the glock 27 off duty. better to have the 10 shot capacity for off duty instead of the 5 shot. but it's up to your friend

                Sheriff (LASD) = LA County Employee
                Police (LAPD) = LA City Employee

                  My Glock 27 seems super accurate for such a short barreled gun

                    Accuracy is in the shooter, not the gun.

                    As to capacity in an off-duty carry weapon, he's a pretty small frame guy, and very active, doesn't wear jackets or vests much; for him to carry a Glock off duty he'd have to change his wardrobe completely. Besides, the 27 is best served as a backup when you have a 22/23 as your main duty weapon. That way you have extra magazines for both.

                      I'm confused as to where the power of attorney fits in. Is this guy incapacitated in some way? Why the need legally act on his behalf?

                        The department usually has it's own list of handguns that are approved as duty weapons. I know LASD has one, but I don't know if LAPD does. Have him get a copy of the list, that way you can narrow the search.

                          I'd tell him not to worry, the LAPD will teach him what he needs to know about firearms. After he is done he can go and learn some more on his own.

                            I'd tell your friend to move to a different district. LA is too political and have a huge magnifying glass on each LEO.

                            Anyways, get him a gun that fits, shoots and handles excellent: Glock!

                              many officers carry glocks. i also see quite a few sig's out there. i recall a thread were an officer said when he started carrying "a big ugly sig" people started listening to his commands more. most of what they issue is pritty reliable in the field. and cops definetly do not need to konw much about guns. just talk to the ones that you dont see in the gun store, and you will see what your average cop konws about guns.
                              I carry a custom stainless GAU-8
