I've narrowed it down to three 45 caliber pistols around $800. Springfield 1911 Loaded, Springfield XDM or Sig 220 Elite Dark. Tried the Glock 21SF and its still quite big. This will be my HD pistol. Something I would reach for when I hear something go bump in the night. I would also use it for range/target shooting so I want it accurate. What do you guys think or am I missing something.

Springfield 1911 Loaded hands down. It is all about the trigger. Carry cocked and locked, get a nice relatively light weight pull, with a short reset, and every pull is consistent from start to finish. The other two options can't say that. The XD has an extremely long trigger reset which is very annoying and a hinderance to accuracy and the Sig is a DA/SA which is difficult to master compared to the SAO 1911.
Besides, it is a sin not to own at least one 1911. Isn't it?Comment

springfield 1911 or the sig 220. either way you can't go wrong. Pick the one that you can shoot the best, and buy the other one after you've saved up again.sigpic
Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

1911 for sure. Everyone should own AT LEAST one! Polymer guns I would stick with Glock and S&W. The 21sf fits nice in my hand but its no 1911. I heard that the new Sigs are not as good as the older models for some reason. They also have a higher bore and to me seem a little bulkier. They do come in DA/SA with a decocker if you want to carry hammer down.
I would suggest renting them first to see what you like best. But my picks from you list would be in this order:
1911
Glock 21sf
Sig 220
XDM
You should also look at the S&W M&P45. Its a single stack and fits nice in the hand.Comment

Think about M&P .45
Fubar,
I can recommend the S&W M&P .45. My favorite plastic gun. I also love 1911s. With that said, my experience has been, you need more time with 1911. Either keeping it oiled and clean, to developing a routine grip and presentation, to ensure you sweep the safety.
