    Custom 1911 rail

I'd like to get a railed 1911, or attach a rail to an existing 1911, but I don't like how any of the rails on the market right now look. I'd like to get a custom one machined/shaped and then screwed onto the frame like the Dawson Precision one, but don't have a clue as to who I would contact about making one. Would I talk to a gunsmith or a metalsmith? Does anyone know of any metalsmiths or gunsmiths that would machine a custom-shaped rail for a 1911?

Well, I'm not looking for any existing rails. What I was asking about is, is there anyone someone knows of that can fabricate a custom rail, as in one made from scratch, the way I want it to look.

You want to talk to a gunsmith for that. A lot of people get existing rails on guns shortened etc. I've seen it done a couple places but you'll probably have to wait.

I see what you're getting at now. Sounds like a really interesting (and probably expensive!) project. Perhaps you should post over on LouderThanWords, many top tier gunsmiths hang out there. This sounds like the type of thing that should be in one of their hands.

Ken at Genecco Gun Works is the guy I go to get my pistols customized. He did a geat job reinforcing the dust cover on my FNP9. As most of you already know, heat will cause warpage on plastics and after 4000 rounds were ran through the FNP9, I noticed the thing started to warp a little bit. I took this to Ken and had him installed a couple of steel plates and epoxied (sp?) the dust cover. It was an excellent job and I highly recommend Ken at each opportunity to do so. Look him up if you need your guns worked by a mastersmith.

+1 for Louder than Words. If you go to the site, the opening photo shows "LTW #7" which had the rail custom made and installed, if I remember correctly. I'm sure any of those smiths could do what you want.

Before you go modifying anything, you should check out the light rail from Dawson Precision. Their rail is smaller than standard and requires their adapter to use standard rail accessories, but the Dawson rail is unobtrusive, looks clean, and most importantly it allows the pistol to still use a standard holster such as a serpa since the rail doesn't add significant bulk. They make them for specific 1911 models (different models for different brands), as well as Sig P220 and Baretta. This rail is the best looking option I've ever seen!

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

buying a 1911 with an integral rail might be your best option if your looking for the cleanest look. my problem with the dawson rail is the price. $70 for the rail + $70 for the adapter + $250 for a surefire light = $390. a caspian or novak rail is $70 and add a TLR1 for $100 then you have an extra couple hundred bucks for ammo.

I already mentioned in my original post that I like the Dawson rail in its method of attachment, but I'd like something custom made, not the Dawson rail itself.

I'm sure any good gunsmith can take a section of picatinny rail and weld it on, then shape it to the dustcover to make it look as if it came that way. You would just need to then have the frame reblued, hardchromed, etc. and you're done.
