    Sig P220 Carry

I have a friend who wants to sell his Sig P220 Carry. It has been a safe queen and was bought in August of 2007 and NEVER been fired (except for any factory testing). It's the milled slides (Exeter marked P220's), with an internal extractor.

I have heard via the internet that some people that supposedly had FTE due to the internal extractor. He would like to keep the gun unfired for selling purposes, so I can't take it to the range a put a 100 rounds down for testing before buying it.

I need some advice....get it or not?

    Thanks.

if you get the serial number, you can go to sigforum and check the date. then you can figure/search to see if that year had issues.
Also, how much is he gonna charge you?

Does anyone know from which time period the P220 carry had issues? If so I can then find out base on the serial number if that gun is made during the "trouble" time?

And my friend wants $700 - $750 for it.

If I end up getting it and its one that has FTE issues, did SIG ever come up with a fix? Anything I can do to make it reliable?

      Thanks.

He said it started with a G379 - xxx

So base on the Sig Forum list, looks like its a 2006 production.

Pass. The fix from SIG was the external extractor. Bruce Gray (prominent SIGsmith at GrayGuns) was, last I checked a good while ago, still trying to come up with a fix for people with problem internal extractor 220's. There was no serial number, just the 220 Carry w/ internal extractor. Not sure if this Gray fix came to fruition or how much money it was. There's chances the gun is fine, but why on earth chance with a 700 object meant to protect yourself? According to SIG there never was a problem

Can I buy a new slide for the 220 Carry? The new one with the external extractor? Looks like Sig doesn't put serial numbers on the slides or barrel.

If I can get a new slide, maybe I can tell my friend to drop the price some more and then I would have "new" 220 carry that is reliable one.

The 220 Carry and the 220 Compact are NOT in my collection of .45 Sigs. However, I like the internal extractor models better in most every Sig I do own.

Too bad you aren't up here- I'd offer to buy it from you (if you decided to sell it down the road).

Have your buddy meet you at the range with it- if it works well; buy it.

                      Go for it

Personally I would take a chance on an unfired Sig P220 with internal extractor, just based on my experience. I have 4 Sigs, of which two have internal extractors (P220 and P226), and they have worked perfectly through thousands of rounds. I believe that most internal extractor Sigs work well, and those that don't are fairly rare.

I have a P220 Carry. Serial G389 xxx. Never a single FTF or FTE. I have about 2k rounds through it. I love this damn gun, I would never give it up.

No you can't just get a slide. Again, this particular gun may be fine, but I do remember when I was a SIG person years ago, the powers that be on SIG forum knew how many problem 220 Carry's there were. They would not say anything but "It's not a ton, but it's more than you'd think." Bruce Gray said there's a fundamental design flaw in the 220 internal extractor, it's placed to low and is very fussy about tension. The Carry model exasperated the problem with the lighter, faster slide. There's a reason they switched to the external extractor and it wasn't because it looks cooler. Retooling a production line costs a lot of money.

Doesn't yzrnie in the commercial sales section of the forum sell them new for not much more? Why take a chance?
