Hangfire

In my years of shooting I have never experienced a severe delay in firing after the hammer dropped on a round. There were a couple of occasion that I noticed on my 1911 racegun and a revolver that the rounds did not go off right away. I felt the hammer drop and it was probably a small fraction of a second before the round went off and felt like the rounds were squibs, but the bullets cleared the barrel. The rounds were loaded with primers from the same lot of small pistol primers. I was thinking maybe I didn't seat the primers properly thus creating the unreliable ignition. With that said, has anyone experience a severe hangfire like 3 seconds or longer? Reason I'm asking is the thought always crosses my mind when a round in a revolver doesn't go off. What if I advance to the next round and the previous round goes off not in alignment with the barrel? Worst case scenario is a severe delay is it goes off while at the 6 o'clock position.

Correct me if im wrong, but we're not dealing with black powder here. In my experience with modern cartridges/primers and smokeless powder it either goes off or it doesnt.

I saw this happen to a security guard taking his gun card class and I was qualifying for my CCW class. The guy was using .357 magnum reloads in a standard 5 1/2 inch S&W revolver that were not doing so good, he had one hangfire and two that had to be cycled twice. I don't know why it happened but it was annoying to have to keep waiting for him to clear his gun.
