    Red dots on pistolas

Anyone have a red dot on their pistols? I saw that Leupold DeltaPoint Reflex Sight and said, "Hmmm...interesting proposition..." I also saw that article where there was a Docter red dot installed on a glock and thought that was pretty cool too. Besides the obvious disadvantages on not being able to use irons, and no available holsters. What advantages/disadvantages do you see? I do like being able to do the "both eyes open" sighting with a pistol though.

    Opinions?

For recreational uses... red dot is fun on a pistol. It'll speed you up for sure once you get the hang of it. BUT on a combat pistol where your life depends on it, there's too many things that can go wrong, ie... dead batteries, broken laser, broker glass, etc.

Every newb I take shooting likes this gun best.
Old school Tasco Red Dot, non-magnifying, small dot.
Good enough to hit shotgun hulls at 50+ yards.
The red dot makes for fast pickup and aiming...a must for competition in the open classes.

          For HD or Personal defense
Open or Night sights would be the preference

          Ok on a 1911 platform

don't you leave both eyes open when you shoot with iron sights?

the last red dot i tried was a Doctor sight on a S&W M-627. it took a bit of getting used to when run at speed because the dot was lower than i expected. they single plane sight alignment is very easy on the eyes

I know that this is technically not a pistola, but it works great on this revolver.

I would assume you are talking of a 'fighting pistol'. Had the chance to shoot a set up like what you are mentioning Glock / Red Dot, awesome although I already shoot with both eyes open unless a high precision shot is necessary.

Check here at warrior talk where Gabe Suarez gives the 'why' on this type of set up.

I did this as a pimp your revolver gag for myself -- at first -- but everything seems to work great. It really feels like cheating as you pop everything into a fairly small group at 25 yards, offhand. If you are not particularly strong in the hands or arm this obviously may not be all that wieldy.

Yeah, lots of people have red dots on their pistols.
Every "Open Division" shooter does, and they have many advantages.

You have several types to choose from:
Frame mounted, tube style (as shown above)
Frame mounted, tubeless (C-More is the most popular)
Slide mounted micro, such as the Dr. Optics

You really ought to try all three types before spending any money.
Find a local IPSC or steel match, you'll see all types and I guarantee somebody will offer to let you try their blaster if you ask them about it.

There are lots of holsters that work, but they are the race type not everyday carry.

They are best on pistols that have no muzzle flip, otherwise the dot disappears and (hopefully) reappears every shot. So .22's or compensated centerfire pistols.

If you put a Dr. on a service type centerfire pistol, you'll be looking for the dot after most shots which is no fun.

I have my Tasco Propoint from the 80's still running strong
and fun to shoot on my Ruger 22/45 5 1/2" Stainless Target Model.

                          I previously had it mounted on my S&W 6" 586 L-Frame .357 magnum.

I really want one on my 1911. the only one I would get is the one made by Trijcon. its very small and compact. Also, it has a built in rear sight. so incase the glass broke in some freakish accident, you can still use the iron sights.

✟ In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."✟
