really you can save your money no need to buy any ammofor either
just get a pump shotgun. Pump that baby real loud once that is an unmistakable sound. It will send pants pissing terror into any badguy and stop them on the spot.Protect public lands access http://www.backcountryhunters.org/Comment

Let's take somethings into consideration here
1. The average robbery/mugging/home invasion where the bad guy pulls a gun on you is going to be at 21 feet or 7 yards.
2. The average time elapsed from the start of the event to where one party either the good or the bad guy has control or even in most cases the end of the event resulting in shots fired is 1.5 seconds
3. the average number of shots fired is 1.24
4. A FBI study proved that 60% of violent crimals trained with their firearm or weapon more than police officers do (atleast the one who only shoot their weapons once every 6 months to requalify)
You will have 1 and a 1/2 seconds to acquire the threat, drop everything you are doing (or wake up), grab your weapon, aim down the sights and press the trigger. You are trusting the most important second and a half of your life at that point to a 22lr??????? Against a decently disiplined and trained crimal even. a knife would be a better choice at that point or a base ball bat. Any centerfire hand gun round will be a much better choice than a 22lr. The 25auto has killed many bad guys in the past, and would be a good choice if worried about recoil or a follow up shot which statistically won't happen.
The more important questions are:
How often do you train with your firearm?
How often do you shoot with your firearm?
How often do you carry your firearm? (for you ccw people)But I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softely, because you tread on my dreams.Comment

Please don't take this as criticism, because I definitely don't mean it as such, but what is a "forend"? I've never heard that term before in my life. I'm assuming from the context that it's an alternative to "forehead," I'm just curious if it's a word in common usage and I'm a little behind in my semantic studies.I have to assume this is a joke.
For a primary 9mm is the smallest you should go for a self defense handgun. .380 is the absolute smallest for a backup, and even then I wouldn't really trust it.
Unless you hit them in the eye, at the perfect angle all a .22lr is going to do is make them very, very angry.
I know a police officer with a scar on his forend to prove it. Robber shot him from 15 feet way square in his forend. Round changed direction the moment it hit bone, went up into his hairline and out the back of his scalp. He proceeded to charge, tackle, and cuff the bad guy. It was not until backup arrived and asked what that blood on his forehead was that he realized he had been shot.
So seriously, .22lr is for getting rid of your rat problem only...and by that I mean the 4 legged variety.

As to the topic at hand: for HD, I would much prefer .45 and I can't imagine a scenario where .22 would take preference.Comment

The obvious answer is not worth debating. Home Defense = .45ACP > .22LR
Both are great rounds, but they are great in (but not limited to) specialized roles.
.22 LR - High volume target practice, plinking, hunting small game/vermin.
.45 ACP - Home Defense / Personal Defense
Having said that however, having a .22lr for home defense is still better than having no gun at all. This old lady here might owe her life to a .22 Revolver

the police reloaded her hand gun! that was very nice of them +1 to that department. The obvious answer is not worth debating. Home Defense = .45ACP > .22LR

OK.. I'll bite but there is really no debate....
I have clients who have ortho issues who carry the .22 due to recoil ....
they KNOW that a .22 wont go off every time you pull the trigger...it's an ammo thing...
I suggest they carry eley top grade target ammo... so it will go off every time... and that they carry a revolver...that way they can just pull the trigger again when it doesn't go off....
seriously the .22 is a mistake...
We have recently discovered the .327 mag in the Ruger Sp101... with .32 sw long wadcutters it recoils like a .22 and at least it goes off every time... geez... and if you need the mags at least they fit in the gun and are available...Greebo, as a matter of feline pride, would attempt to fight or rape absolutely anything, up to and including a four-horse logging wagon. listen to the mp3 on this thread:
its about a 30+ year cop vet that had been in 2 dozen fire fights and survived. he is being interviewed in this MP3. one firefight that caught my attention was his second time. he said him and his partner were trying to take down a known drug dealer and when they got a hold of him, they searched him and the guy pulled out a knife. the drug dealer went to attack his partner and he was shot point blank 6 times, then in the back 6 times, then 2-3 more times, finally the drug dealer went down! but he died 10 days later of 14 gun shot wounds! unbelivable! and they were shooting him with hollow points.Have an idea or invention? ✟ In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."✟Comment

If rapis firing is what's important, then neither is a good choice. I like the snappier 9mm for rapid firing, you see the sight go straight up and come down on targetfor the next shot.Hello,
Which of the caliber be better for defense in a handgun? a 45 Auto or a 22LR?
45 Auto in a medium frame will deliver big bullet along with a big recoil hence less follow up shots. (Maybe less frequent too)
22LR will deliver smaller but more bullets (almost) instantaneously into the target
What do you think?
Food for thought for the long weekend
The 45 has this long push that moves its sight to the side, making retargeting slower. and the .22lr isn't suitable because its low cycle rate risks an out of battery detonation.
So, I'd recommend that you get a 9mm.Comment
