although i'd be carrying my w german sig P220 .45 ACP, of the guns mentioned i'd use the G21 IF i had large hands. the 686 is a good pick if he wants a revolver; stainless for harsh weather and plenty of power.

S&W 686 or other .357 stainless magnum revolver would be my choice. Why ? Stainless is good against the elements and you have a lot of versatility on ammunition choice - .38 special, snakeshot loads, and full power .357 magnum loads.

Well the big question is what is he trying to defend himself against? If it's against people, then any semi-automatic would work. If it's against dangerous predators, he's going to want a revolver and in a fairly substantial caliber (.454 casull at least)

Um, .454 casull AT LEAST??? This is in California, right? Generally a .357 is more than enough to dispatch anything coming your way in california. A .44 magnum is good to make you feel better, what in god's green earth do you need a .454 for in Cali?? I mean, it can't hurt(unless you can't shoot it well), but it seems massively overkill.

With the Glock, it will tolerate any harsh terrain and weather: snow, rain, heat, etc. Its polymer reciever and tennifer slide/barrel has been reliable throughout. If it were to go through such weather torture, (in most rare occcasions) the only part that would have to be replaced would be the trigger bar...and maybe the locking block since they can be exposed to rust...but we're talking about the most EXTREME conditions.

Too bad Glock hasn't invented a pistol in .44mag, I'd grab that in bear country.

For protection, I always say wheelgun. They dont jam. That being said, I carry a 44 mag taurus when out in the woods (see avatar). Or the 45 lc with the homegrowns. Own a hk usp in stainless that I take if I feel like I am going in to a bad area and want firepower, and keep a snubby 357 in the headboard. For all around stuff I rely on mu usp though.

.40 is good to go for anything in california / lower 48.

HK P2000, 10rds (12 if his rich *** has prebans rattling around somewhere) small enough for CCW (certainly smaller than other contenders), enough horsepower for everything mentioned.

if the HK isn't his speed, a glock 23 is another good option.

bonus points, if he's rich he likes this to be convenient, and anything with an ammo shelf will likely have .40
