many of us including my self might agrea that the Taurus PT1911 is the best value, but its not CA legal in the first place. also as with any taurus its complete hit or miss. while i do think the company is very very under rated, i have seen some very sketchy problems occure in a few autos made by them
    I carry a custom stainless GAU-8

Yeah, if you can get one without a myriad of machining issues.

The Dan Wesson (for a target pistol) is the best on the list hands down. Take it from someone who owns a lot of 1911's...including a POS S&W...

      Yeah, right.

Because I apparently know NOTHING about 1911s!

Just how many do you own?

I never said you know nothing about 1911's (how would I know that? I don't even know you.)...but I DO know about S&W 1911's because not only do I own one, but I have several friends who bought a S&W 1911 because their duty issue weapons in a S&W and they figured a S&W 1911 must be as good as a 1911 as any. As we all found out, S&W has a bit to learn about MACHINING 1911's. Every single one had some sort of fault. I will say that their external extractor DOES indeed work just fine. If S&W wasn't a hit and miss with their manufacturing, I would recommend them.

As for the number of 1911's that I own...my current collection consists of nearly two dozen 1911s. That's just what I have on hand, not what I previously owned.

Well, I disagree. Between myself and my friends, we have over 10 S&W 1911s and none of them have given us any trouble. Sounds like you got a hold of 2 or 3 bad ones.
I am sorry you have had trouble with yours, but in my experience that is truly the exception.

Well, I'm gonna vote for something not on your poll.

Dollar for dollar, the Les Baer PII.

The reason I decided on the Kimber Custom II was because they also make the .22LR conversion kit for it, which will save me a lot of money on ammo. I know, I could have bought a similar mil-spec 1911 from another manufacture and the conversion kit, but I didn't want to take any chances with fit/accuracy/wear issues from slight differences in manufacturing tolerances.

The .22 Conversion will fit on virtually any Gov't or Commander size 1911 frame.

I own 9 1911's of various brands and price ranges and have shot just about every 1911 on the market. Without a dollar constraint, I'd have to agree with Black Majik, the best 1911 on a dollar for dollar basis is the Les Baer Premier II.

Lo and behold my S&W 1911 came back from S&W...guess what they did to fix the problems? NOTHING. They held my gun for about a month and did nothing to the gun. Makes me want to run out and buy another one...

edit: actually, I take that back, they did shoot the snot out of it and left it dirty.

Pointman 7. Accurate, no MIM parts, rare (in terms of brand recognition) and feels great. It's a very tight gun with nearly no play (compared to the Kimbers and Springfields that i've handled)
