.45 it will have a much more managable recoil, more of a push instead of the .40's snap. Plus it goes hand in hand with the 1911.

In California I would get 45 since you can only hold 10, they might as well be the 10 biggest you can fit. I reload, so finding either is not a problem, but if you did not reload, 40 is cheaper and easier to find.Comment

Though I've enjoyed shooting a couple of .40's, I use and trust my .45 1911. Purely subjective, I know."I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."

✟ In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."✟Comment

They both have their strengths. .45 ACP is tried and true--slower and less recoil--and doesn't penetrate as well and costs more to shoot. .40 is hot and jumpy to shoot--but penetrates far better and is more plentiful and cheaper.
In my view, you can buy a .40 Sig and swap barrels for .357 SIG (now that's a kick a*s round) even get a 9mm Bar-sto or other barrel--three calibers in one. 45 ACP? Well, that's it and you can carry fewer rounds per magazine too though in most scenarios that isn't going to matter--the rule of 3's: 3 yards, 3 rounds, 3 seconds. That's most gun fights. Either one will do you. Both have their fans and there is no "right" for you except what you say it is. .45 is the first round I started with and I fell in love with it. Nothing is the same to shoot as a .45
I can't give it up and its not too hard to find in this area, which is a plus!
As far as alcoholic beverage a 40z would do me good =D I just drank one hahahaAnyone wanna go shooting?Comment

I like em both! I have a .40 compact and a full size .45, planning on buying a full size .40 as my next handgun.....but if I had to chose just one....its gotta be a .45Originally posted by DirtbikerYou're creepy old guy.
You not getting it unless you're loaded like Bill Gates or have game like Neil McCauley.

I just plain shoot better when I am shooting a .45 ACP. And I like 1911's, especially in .45. YMMV"All bad precedents began as justifiable measures." Julius CaesarComment

I can try to bs my reasoning for choosing .45, you know, availability in SHTF, powerful, big, blah blah blah. But reall, I just feel safer having a .45 near me. Thats it.Comment

I voted .40. I was debating between .40 and .45. I knew I wanted a Glock. So I ran around looking for ammo. Never saw even a single box of .45. I still wasn't totally convinced until I handled the glock in .45. It was too fat for my hand. Also the gun was $50.00 more than the .40 alternitive and the .40 also had night sites. Ammo is cheaper and easier to find for the most part. I still want a .45 but will hold out for awhile until ammo is more abundant.Comment
