    Clean your guns!!!!!! (rant)

I bought a beautiful Browning Buckmark yesterday, along with some other stuff. The gun looked to be in great condition. I took it out to Oaktree today to shoot some stuff and it stopped firing. It just plain stopped. Needless to say, I was mad as hell. I started taking apart and cleaning it. The gun was so dirty, the solvent I was using (Ballistol) turned into paste. After scrubbing and polishing for a while, I lubed it up and put it back together. It shot just fine.

I have a cousin who is a member here that doesn't clean his guns. I've seen members here boast about firing thousands of rounds over years and not cleaning their pistols/rifles. That's disgusting. Guns are to be respected, maintained, and clean. Do you really want that dirt inside to bite you in the *** at the worst possible time?
Will trade liquor/wine/beer for parts and accesories and ammo! PM me. Dont drink n shoot. Offer void where prohibited. Must be 21 or older, etc. etc.

    Sorry about your experience.

But there is cleaning and there is cleaning. There is a difference between being OCD and scrubbing the crap out of your gun every time you shoot 50 rounds through it and cleaning essential parts so that it will function. Sometimes some lube on moving parts and a quick patch through the bore is all that is necessary. But it is important to check and detail strip every new gun you get.

Okay. That sux. I usually do that break down and check-out/clean BEFORE I shoot it for the first time.

I'll counter that argument with, do you really want to bet your life on a gun the won't function properly while dirty?

I know I don't, and none of my centerfire guns have ever needed to be cleaned, I keep the nicer ones nice, but otherwise, I rarely clean them. The one exception is my Ruger .22/45, it starts to have issues if I let it go more than 2k rounds without a cleaning, I believe it's common with .22 semis, the ammo is dirty and they get shot a whole bunch.

I have gotten a lot lazier over the years and my guns show it. I eventually break them down and clean them, but it is nice to know they will keep chugging along as long as there is oil on them.

For the ones that are to be used for self defense, I am more mindful about cleaning them. As for the social range guns, I don't worry. In one case I shot a gun a fair bit then left it dirty for nearly 20 years. It looked fine and no rust. I cleaned it and then shot it and all was jusy fine with it.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

maybe you should of inspected it first, there are alot of shady people out there. but you do have a good point! proper cleaning = less problems.

I've got a cheap Hi-point 9mm I've got something around 2k rounds through it. It doesn't get anything more than a barrel punch and clean what I can get to and it works just fine. However...

My RIA tactical that has about the same number of rounds through it and is what I am going to grab if I need a weapon in an emergency gets cleaned if it gets fired. If I shoot 50 rounds it gets field stripped and cleaned. Call it OCD, anal, or being a neat freak if my butt is going to depend on it going bang when I need it then it is going to be spotless.

I keep the one under my pillow super clean and everything else gets an occasional cleaning.

I never understand those people who don't clean their gun. I for one ENJOY cleaning my guns. It's very zen for me.

The worst are those gun nuts felt the need to prove something by stated "I have shot through thousands of round and never cleaning it. It shoot just fine..." I guess to each their own.

Maybe you need more reliable guns?
