GLOCK 45 gap

I never wrote that I knew JACK about the 45GAP other than it my guesstimate that Glock wanted their own "signature" round. From what I have read, it offers no advantage over the 45ACP round.

Take a minute and relax, I was not disparaging the 45GAP. I'm sure it is a fine round. My point is that it is going to have a very tough time gaining market traction.

Know that this is coming from a 357SIG fan .

Ok, fair enough. I was reading your comment about the .45 GAP being the answer to a question that nobody asked and I assumed that you were knocking the round.

As a faithful G37/.45GAP owner, let me chime in about this round. A lot of people think that the .45 GAP was supposed to be a replacement the .45 ACP, and that's why they hate on the .45 GAP: ballistically, it does fall a little short of the .45 ACP, so people view it as a failure. But that is not the purpose of the .45 GAP. The .45 GAP is a bit of an enthusiast round -- you have to really be a fan of the Glock platform to appreciate it.

The purpose of the .45 GAP is as follows: To put a large-caliber round into the standard small-frame Glock pistol. That's all it is. Because of the Glock's design and grip angle, it is not possible to fit .45 ACP into the standard Glock frame without making it significantly bigger (and therefore less comfortable for some of us). Some of us believe in the "big, heavy bullet a la .45 ACP" school of thought as opposed to the "small, zippy bullet a la 9mm or .357 Sig" school of thought. The .45 GAP caliber allows us to have that big, heavy bullet in the same frame size we all know and love.

For me, the jury's still out on whether the G37 is a good pistol. It has some quirks that are not evident with other Glock models. But the .45 GAP round itself is definitely a great round if you fit the niche that it's designed for.

Since you obviously know so much about the .45 GAP round, why don't you enlighten us? What exactly was the intended purpose of the .45 GAP?

Sure. The issues are all magazine-related. 10 rounds of .45 GAP is just too much to stuff into the standard magazine. It makes the sides of the magazine bulge out just like the old-school NDF mags. This causes the magazine to have some problems with insertion and removal. It doesn't drop free when it's fully loaded, and it takes an epic amount of force to insert -- you have to really SLAM that mother in if you want it to seat.

Another oddity is that the slide binds up on a fully loaded magazine. That is, if you insert a full 10rd magazine on a closed slide and try to rack it, you will experience great difficulty in racking the slide. When you do finally get the slide all the way back you are rewarded with a nice big gouge in the brass of the top round, caused by the friction of the slide being drawn over the brass.

I've tried 3 different magazines and they all had the same effect. I believe 10 rounds is just too much to fit in the magazine. When I download to 9 rounds or 8 rounds the problems go away... but if I wanted a .45 caliber pistol that holds 8 or 9 rounds, I would have left my Glock in the safe and taken out my 1911 instead.

I would have to agree. The .45 GAP is the answer to a nonexisting problem.

My 45gap is the Springfield XD model and it is a fine gun to shoot, ammo is easy to get online and you can use 45 acp dies to reload.
but if you don't like it you never will. so stay with your 45 acp or 9mm or whatever it is you like to shoot.
