    Kimber 1911 rust?

was thinking of getting a Kimber 1911 but I read some bad reviews about how easy it rusts. I picked up a gun and examined it but I saw some spots and took a few pictures. This is a picture I took of a gun at Turners. Can you tell me if this is rust?

At least you can rack the slide. I've seen them show up new with the barrel rusted to the slide

A little Bar Keepers Friend would remove that. Just make sure you clean REALLY well after. Just remember...stainless means stain resistant.

Love that stuff. I used to use it to touch up the barrel of my musket when I did Civil War re-enactments.

it looks like some sort of chemical reaction on the barrel. do you lube it when you store it? you shouldn't have that problem if you did.

Yep! Use some steel wool and Break Free CLP and it will go away. The back of the bolt on my Rem 700 will do the same thing. You also need to air the safe out weekly, especially if you live in an area with mucho humidity. It also helps to keep your sweaty hands off the guns.

Kimber has a warning about stainless steel rusting in the manual. When I sent mine back for repairs I got an ear chewing from the Service Dept Supervisor about the amount of oil on/in the gun.

If you believe the guy in the gun store I was in earlier today, that is not rust, its patina... They will say anything to sell a rusty gun.

The barrel is shipped "in the white" according to Kimber. You have to keep it oiled, cared for, etc. If you send it to them, they will refinish it back to perfect. I'm duracoating mine, along with the rest of the gun.

If stainless steel is rusting in a safe with silica anti moisture pellets then it is poor quality stainless steel.
My Henkel stainless steel knives I use for cooking, cut thru meat, get exposed to moisture and salt, I have left them uncleaned by the BBQ grill outside for weeks (forgot them) and not a spot of rust.

Yes Kimbers will rust you need to keep your pistol lubed to prevent this,I would wipe it down with a silicon cloth before it is stored
