Are you going to be carrying it or will it be sitting behind a counter, that should also be a factor in your choice. Counter gun big carry gun small. I haven,t handled smith,s much but I do have a Ruger GP100 4", great gun IMO. Like everyone says pick up a couple different ones and get a feel for them. Redhemi

My Ruger Security Six will likely be the last gun I give up. I may be buried with it...so I can use it in the next world and all that

I'll chime in for a Ruger GP100 as well. I personally own one in 6", but for your purposes, 4" is probably more practical. Its very good bang for your buck and since I'm guessing it's mainly to be left somewhere in your shop for easy access.. seems like the weight won't be too much of a problem (if anything, good to dampen recoil).

Reason why I say the GP100... my guess is that most of the times, it'll just be sitting there. No reason to spend more for creature comforts. Its reliable as all heck and can double as a bludgeon if you run out of ammo. Workhorse gun for your work. However, if you're getting this gun for recreation purposes as well, then go ahead and get what you like to shoot.

My suggestion if you go with the GP100 is if you ever have some time.. dry fire the thing like crazy. My GP100 can claim to have a trigger smoother than my Sig.

In my area, the Ruger GP100 goes for $500 to $600. The Smith 586 is over $700.
My GP100 is stainless and 4" barrel. It is 20 years old and never failed. It has Hogue grips, an orange front sight, and a great trigger job. I like it better than any other .357 revolver I have ever shot, including the Colt Python.
I think Smth is a little better trigger and more nicely finished out of the box.
I think Ruger is built heavier and more durable.
Personally, I would save $100 to $200 and get the stronger of the 2.
          Good luck.
