    S&W 586 .357 Magnum, 4" if you're looking for blue
    S&W 686 .357 Magnum, 4" if you want stainless
    It's too late, it's over.

S&W unless you can find a Ruger Security/Service/Speed-Six

I would go for S&W over any Ruger.

BUt this isn't my lane so I'll just quietly go back

I like Rugers over S&W personally. The GP100 is a dream to shoot.

If you want something shorter, grab a SP101.

I would go for S&W over Ruger also, If money was not an issue. But for the value of the SP101, it cannot be beat. It is built more rugged than the S&W's. Atleast that's the impression I get; don't cry people

Ruger is a tank...and is heavy...
Smith isn't a tank although strong and durable...
we have a number of smith 65's we use to qual guards and for ccw clients...they have had untold thousands of rounds through them... I retimed one, replaced the firing pin on one... and replaced mainsprings...other than that...they still run great...

The SP101 is my revolver of choice, though I am limited to a couple Ruger's and one S&W. It definitely has a great feel to it, and handles the hot 357s like a cheap box of 38s.

Although I currently own a S&W and I do like them, I would not hesitate to pick up a Ruger GP100. A friend of mine has one in 6" and that thing is built to last.

Cheaper than a S&W without sacrificing reliability.

Regardless of what we all tell you it's all just our opinion. You're best bet is to pick out a couple models of each and try them out at the range until you find what you're looking for.

I'm a fan of S&W quality (686) but like the others said, the Ruger (GP100) is a tank. I could shoot full power 357 in the GP100 all day and never feel it, but my finger get worn out - the trigger is touch heavy. The trigger on the S&W is like glass, absolutely beautiful.

Whatever you get, get some good grips and practice like hell. My Ruger has the original rubber and wood insert. The S&W has Hogue.
I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

The S&W 686 is a good choice if you want a full lug gun.

Another good choice is the S&W 66 it was the stainless version of the model 19 combat magnum. The 619 and the 620 are the current versions, the only difference is the sights on the 620 are adjustable. I see a lot of these being used by local security.

Rugers are tanks, something like the GP100 (KGP-141) would serve and it has a full lug as well.

Personally I think it should come down to feel. All are fine reliable firearms that will serve you well. Handle a couple and see which naturally points and balances well in your hand.

I love my GP100 as well as my 586 both are great revolvers. My next buy is going to be a 627, attn Kevin at Ammo Bros, 8 shot SS 357 mag 4" barrel. Cant go wrong with a 357 mag revolver that packs as many rds as your typical 1911.

my opinion of the GP-100 differs somewhat from others here.

my GP-100 reminded me of a Checker Cab...when my first wife and i divorced, i happily let her have it...if that says anything. however i think the Ruger Speed-Six is the ultimate carry .357 Mag...and this from someone who carried a Colt Python as a duty gun
