Beretta 92FS Question

Just before the hi cap mag law went into affect my uncle gave me his 92FS along with several 15 rd mags and it's now under my name. Since then I've put probably several thousand rounds thru it. Almost everytime I take it to the range after putting about 100-200 rounds thru it it starts jamming. By jamming I mean I'll get a stove pipe or double feed. When I get home and clean it, it's working fine again.

So my question for you 92FS owners, has this been the normal experience for you or maybe I'm doing something wrong? Maybe the recoil spring needs to be changed?

I would definitely look at the recoil spring. Some recommend changing it as often as ever 5k rounds to maintain complete reliability. It's a very cheap part so I'd recommend doing it no matter what.

As far as the jamming goes, did this just start recently or has this happened ever since you've owned the pistol? If it just started, I would, once again, recommend changing the recoil spring. If this has been a consistent problem than I would look at the way you are lubricating the gun and what you are lubricating it with.

I've had my 92FS for 17 years. I can't remember having a jam problem at all. What ammo are you using?

I have put probably over 3k rounds down my 92FS, with all stock parts. Not a single problem. Even my G21 had "one" failure to feed issue, but I guess G21 are sensitive to limp wristing. My 92FS also runs, dirty, clean, dry and even half wet. ITs my go to 9mm. HTH

My 92fs only jammed when I tried using 147g winchester sub-sonic which have a truncated cone shaped bullet that gets hung up on the ramp, other than that no probs but I havent put nearly that many rounds through mine.

What are you using to lub the weapon?

I've pretty much put almost every kind of ammo thru it and I get the same results. Mostly I shoot PMC, American Eagle, Fiocchi, Winchester White Box, reloads. Pretty much whatever I find on sale.

As far as what I'm using to clean it. I've been using the Hopp's solvent to clean it and then any metal parts I've been coating it with Hopp's gun oil too. Usually I'll put a few drops onto a rag and wipe so it's a thin coat of oil protecting the metal.

I will look into ordering a new recoil spring a guide rod. I was guessing on replacing the spring first but wanted to get some feedback too.

I would put a drop or two along the rails of the pistols frame. Putting it on a rag and wiping the metal pieces doesn't sound like near enough lube to me. If the rails are dry to begin with , I can see you having your issue. Try more lube. Is it also possible your grip is getting weak toward the end of your session and limp wristing may be a contributor?

I would echo the comments...
IMHO... seeing about 1000 guns on the range a year with lots of berettas... I have noticed a few thing... military folks probably have a more learned perspective...

the Beretta likes it wet...not too wet.... but slippery...
change the springs every 3000 rounds or so...
check for broken/bent...
shoot good ammo...the beretta seems to like it on the hotter side.. have had great luck with S&B...had some smg ammo that shot more accurately then I could hold... simply amazing corrosive stuff...just cleaned with windex and shot on...

that's not the point. you can own your gun for 150 years and only put 500 rounds through it than of course there wont be a problem

The guide rod on mine is metal and it's not bent. Did a google search and found this place for replacement guide rod and recoil spring. I was planning on getting the factory 13# spring. Anybody have any experience with these people? If not any recommendations on where to get them?

OP- I am not an expert here, but both of my Glocks will jam on only one certain brand of ammo- WWB. So, I dont buy those anymore.

If not the ammo, then the recoil spring as mentioned prior?

Still have my first Beretta 92F. It has a minimum of 100,000 down the tube since 1985. Every kind of 9mm ammo known to man (including 1000's of rds. of reloads) with the exception of the hot +P+ sub gun stuff. Never, ever a problem. Original slide, frame, guide rod, all springs, locking lug, barrel. Only thing different is a new pair of factory plastic grips, newer factory mags and the slide was refinished in the earlier 90's. The fit / action of the frame / slide is like butter.

Like others have mentioned, keep the rails (frame & slide) well cleaned and well lube. I use a Q-Tip to clean and lube. I prefer Militec-1. Most FTF's are caused by mags. Check yours and make sure the lips are not bent and the mags seat properly and lock into place. Also don't forget to clean (just don't wipe down, take apart) your mags every time you clean your gun. No exceptions.

With a little TLC, your Beretta will out live both of us together. Good Luck.
