My (limited!) understanding was that back in the day the first stainless autos had problems with galling. A blued slide on a stainless frame avoids that issue.

          Old practice...

It's not a new trend. The Colt below was made in 1989. Contrasting colors have long been used in automobiles, clothing, houses and all sorts of consumer products. Many people like the look and it helps sell your product.

I think OD Green and Black or Tan and Black look great on a pistol

Two tone is not by any means new. Smith & Wesson has been making two tone revolvers a long time. Do an image search for S&W pinto guns and you'll see.
                It's too late, it's over.

I guess the color infused poly frames are here to stay, but I think all that duracoating will for the most part go away. Two tone semis have been around a long time, Smith & Wesson's two tone "Pinto" version on some revolvers was a nickel barrel and cylinder on a blued frame.

                    Kimber big on two tones

If you go to the Kimber website and look at the 1911 product offering, it seems that two tone guns are a major factor. One of Kimber's best sellers for maybe 10 years has been the CDP (Combat Defensive Pistol) line of two tone guns. I think in a competitive market like 1911s, you can differentiate your product from others by use of two tone colors and other unusual features like "melted" slides to knock off the sharp edges.

I wanted the XD45 in bi-tone but according to state laws it's not safe because it's not on the list. A totally identical full black xd45 is on the list, I guess they're so stupid that the stainless slide is unsafe hahahaha

                              New? No way.

                              Different? Maybe.

                              Trends come and go.

I saw my first two-tone (electronickeled frame, blued slide) 1911 in the 1970's.

                                Where have you been?

The two-tone Combat Commander on the right is from F. Bob Chow, circa 1980. The two tone 1911 in the center is a blued 9 x 23 conversion slide on a stanless frame.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.
