SW1911 quality issues.

My SW1911 was OK but not impressive in terms of build quality when I held it in my hand. There were some issues related to quality and workmanship that I thought could have been better from the factory. If I could do it again, I wouldn't buy an SW1911. Take your money and get a Kimber or SA.

I know I'm weird, but if I handle a gun and don't like the way it looks or feels... I don't buy it.

But I'm weird. I have had my SW 1911 for just over a year and its my baby. I take it with me everywhere (following the law).

It has no flaws and is in my mind one of my best buys.
Not to mention many of my military friends now want one, or two

I don't know how much the gun you were looking at cost but the best bang for your buck is the PM7 from Dan Wesson.

I have read nothing but good & great about S&W 1911's. If you found a bad one, I say ALL manufacturers let them slip though now and then. Just have them get you another.

Remember:

Glocks blow up, SIGs have a high bore axis, Beretta locking blocks break, Ruger is anti-gun, 1911s are unreliable, and HK hates you. Get over it, and go with what works for you.

The thing is, I absolutely loved how mine looked when I saw it in the store. I was just browsing the 1911 cabinet (like I always do) while actually picking up another gun that had come off its 10-day worthless jail time when it caught my eye. I asked to see it and it felt fine, looked great, but the kicker was that the store rep. gave me a really good deal on it, which mostly persuaded me to give it a shot otherwise I may not have. It wasn't until I got home, stripped it, and then took it to the range that I realized the build quality wasn't what you would expect from a $1k 1911. Nothing really wrong with it, I just won't be buying another SW1911. Kind of makes you want to field strip the gun before you buy it from now on.

Mario, I wonder why someone would by any gun without a field-strip before the money goes down...I've never had an issue with that kind of a request.

I'd suggest OP looks for a dealer with THE gun that will be delivered after the 10-day wait shown to him before he agrees on a purchase.

SW has had many issues in the past with quality mainly with revolvers. I have the DK and a basic model in Blue and both have been good out of the box. The only thing I changed was the repulsive flat trigger on the DK. If you think SWs are bad take a look at Paras or even Springfiled GI finsish.

I guess I just never thought of doing it for that transaction, which I regret. But you are right, I would not buy from any person or store who would not let me field strip it as the last check before buying it.

I do not own one, but SW1911 rental at Reeds is a prove to SW quality. Nice shooting gun w/o any issues and very accurate. I was really impressed with it (and I compared it to Les Baer BTW). I am really thinking about Performance Center version now. Never had any issues with my PC revolver either.

I can second that. I shot that very S&W at Reed's and that's what cemented my desire to finally buy a 1911. Not a single FTF or FTE, smooth trigger, recoil was barely noticeable, and much to my surprise, I was hitting near bulls'-eyes and had tight groupings pretty much right away. Don't know if it was just that it was a 1911 or the specific model, but anyway, it was a joy to shoot.

It wasn't until I got home, stripped it, and then took it to the range that I realized the build quality wasn't what you would expect from a $1k 1911. Nothing really wrong with it, I just won't be buying another SW1911.

Just curious: what disappointed you about the build quality? I'm a newbie to 1911s and have no clue how to look at the guts of a 1911 to determine what's superior versus mediocre.
