Looking for a holster...

Looking for a holster for my Glock 17 used to carry while hunting and possibly in the future UOC and for a carbine class. I really like the Serpa's holsters but I have heard of people accidentally shooting their selves and on top of that many courses have banned them for that. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg any input appreciated oh and I'm a lefty!

SERPAs are perfectly fine. When you use them, your trigger finger ends up indexed along the frame, not in the trigger guard. I'm not convinced that the SERPA was the cause of the injuries, so much as poor students. I've never had an issue with mine, but I don't consider myself a novice shooter.

I don't either and I felt the same way about it but the problem is a couple places have banned the holster all together :/ . Whos got the best price on these serpas?

i use a Serpa holster for teaching classes and haven't seen this problem. the Serpa release actually builds very good gun handling skills.

i only know of one school that bans it's use and i have two issues with them anyway:
1. blaming equipment for a training issue isn't a good indication of a professional trainer.
2. engaging in other dangerous range procedures and dismissing the concerns, when it is pointed out to them, is just being "real world" questions their perception in general.

assuming that we are speaking of the same school, the reputation of their founder under fire, in the real world, would also come into question

I planned on taking a magpul class and thats who I was talking about. I know I have heard of more that have banned em but can't seem to remember. I like the way it locks into place thats the feature I really like and when I draw a pistol like leelaw said I always have my trigger finger indexed along the frame... I guess ill just pick one up anyways. Anyone know who has them for a good deal?

What kind of retention are you look for? Do you have any police supply stores near by? I would look there, bring the belt you plan to use with the holster and your gun.
IMO thats the only way to really get the one thats right for you. I have bladetech and Safariland holsters

I have a Fobus Evolution Belt Holster (right-handed) for my Glock 17. I only used it in a defensive handgun course, but it worked for me then. Not sure if they make it left-handed.

FWIW, i got the serpa for my glock 23 even though i had read the posts about people shooting themselves. i have tried to unholster the weapon and have my finger land in the trigger guard (after taking out the mag and safety checking, of course) and it always seems to land on the frame. i think you would have to try to shoot yourself.

that being said, i don't know that i like the retention. its just an extra step to get the gun out. i think i want to get a bladetech now. i just got impatient and didn't want to wait the month and saw the serpa at the costa mesa gun show.

I don't know I think the retention on the serpa seems ideal for me as it will be carried hunting and in other ways possibly in the future. I also like how the serpa is modular and can be switched up to be on a drop leg or other configuration...

have you even tried the Serpa on your belt with a gun?

it isn't an extra step at all, your trigger finger will fall naturally on the paddle when you take a master grip on your holstered gun.

you're not even "pushing in" on the lever, all you do is slide your finger along the lever as you draw

Check out Safariland, they have tons of modular holster set ups. I hav an open top for my G17 but it locks in the gun when reholstering.
I had my gun in that when an Alameda County Deputy tried to disarm me, it was comedy. This dude is screaming "how do you get this f***ing gun out."
My hands are on top of my head and he's yanking on my belt like he wants to rape me.
It took 2 of them to figure out how to get the gun out. Oh and it's fast I used it in IDPA for a year. It's similar to this I have the belt version, but mine you rock the gun back, no button to press.

If you don't mind me asking why did they disarm you UOC? Don't have to answer just wonderinf if you were UOC and how scary it must have been to have a uninformed LEO try to rip you're pants off! haha.

i have it on a paddle but i'll try it on the belt.

its not that i have a hard time getting it out, i'm just imagining in a stressful situation, i wouldn't want to have it snag even once.
