    Thoughts on the XD40?

I'm happy to say my brother is ready to buy his first gun . He is looking at the XD40 and so far has heard good things as have I. What are you thoughts and experience with this gun?

    Thanks

I've only shot the 9mm version, but I really liked the ergonomics. Shot some steel with one and the gun pointed great and naturally, and it was a sweet shooter.

You guys can research the XDs more here.

The XD-40 is a great gun especially for the price, I've never had a problem with mine, and for a plastic gun..... ......it's got good pointing and handling characteristics.

I shot a 40 once, it was ok but I wasnt impressed. I don't know how much they cost nowadays but I would go with an HK USP if it were me.

Purely a personal decision mind you. The USP feels better and I shoot more accurately on it compared to the XD.

There's about a 200-300 dollar difference between the price of the guns, which could make a difference to some people.

          I think the cheapest I've seen a XD was $399, USP $679.

I have the XD-40 and like it very much. It tends to fit most hands better than the Glock 22 or 23 and has a similar limited double action operation. Mine is accurate, reliable, easy to shoot, and fun. It eats everything I feed it and it was less expensive than my other .40s (Glock 23, HK USP40c, SigPro 2340, Sig P229, Beretta 9000s). I think the most important decision is whether or not to get a DA/SA, DA only, SA only or limited DA. IMHO for a first gun, one should get either a DA/SA or DA only.

Congrats to him! Always good to welcome a new shooter into the ranks. Where did he buy it?

He said he bought it at a little shop in San Luis Obispo. He is in school at Cal Poly. His room mates are anti gun panzies so this should be a good show.

Oh and BTW, they had a rule at the shop/range that you could not rent a gun if you came alone. They want someone with you who knows your mental state to make sure you would not "off" yourself with their gun. Said it was an insurance rule.

Is he in an apartment? I recall lots of these pansy universities ban firearms from dorms.

Tell him congrats. He will enjoy. Make sure he is aware of the laws regarding guns on school grounds...they apply to universities as well. I've heard horror stories of people living in University housing (even apartments) or showing fiends their new gun in their trunk in school parking lots, being charged with gun crimes.

I bought an xd9 and can't wait to get rid of it. It was the first gun I bought, which happened to be on impulse. The XDs tend to rust with relative ease and there have been many cases in which they jam. My xd has slightly rusted, and I am located in San Francisco. During the first 150 rds, my xd9 jammed 10+ times. Also, the sights were incorrrectly installed and the gun will shoot to the left. I've had several friends try it and they all shoot to the left also so it is not user error. Customer service at SA is great though, they offered to refinish the gun for me free of charge.
