    1911 stripped frames

I know these frames require an FFL, but can I DROS one without it being a complete pistol?

I am interested in building a 1911 from scratch.

    Thx.

If I recall correctly, it must be on the DOJ "safe handgun" list.

Nope. Have to acquire one via PPT, Intra-familial or LE.

Why wouldn't it qualify as an "other" type handgun, thus bipassing the California safe handgun roster? That is how we get AR Pistols in this state. Make them single shot and register them as an "other".

Just asking. I don't have plans to do this. It just seems like the way to do it is already built into the law.

you may be thinking of "other" as it is on the 4473, not the DROS. There is no "other" for terms of DROSing. For the most part, it is either DROSed as a handgun or as a long gun.

nope. Single-shot AR-pistols are not an "other". They are 4473'd and DROsed as a pistol. For terms of the roster, they are considered roster-exempt due to meeting the definition of a single-shot dimensionally-compliant pistol.

A stripped lower/frame does not meet the requirements to be DROSed as a roster-exempt single-shot pistol. The CGF was working on the NeRF option in an attempt to show that the roster didn't apply to stripped frames, but decided to go after the entire Roster instead with Ivan's lawsuit.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Not entirely, if someone owns one already in the state you can do a PPT.

Stripped 1911 frames are somewhat problematic to get, unless you can do a PPT for one already in CA. However, a viable option might be to find a Springfield Armory GI or Milspec, which are rostered or something along the line of a basic 1911. Buy it, and toss/sell all the small bits and keep the slide and frame to build off or even sell the slide.

I tried to order a TC Contender G2 frame (which IS a single shot), and no joy.

That firearm is exempt from the roster...maybe whoever you tried to order it from is not aware of the single shot exemption?

a bare T/C Contender/Encore frame is not roster-exempt. A complete Contender/Encore is roster-exempt as long as it has a 6+" barrel, because at that point it falls under the exemption.

12133(b) The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to a single-shot pistol with a barrel length of not less than six inches and that has an overall length of at least 10 1/2 inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled.

Yup. There was a Spring 2006 DOJ memo about single-shot pistols saying they have having to be complete operational guns, and not sold as just frames.

Or you could be super lucky like me and walk into your favorite local gunstore and SCORE a stripped Caspian frame that had JUST been put on consignment for peanuts!
