I'd say p95 as well but in reality I'd say get a CZ SP01 or CZ75b. Nicer guns, better shooters and not rattle traps.

The P95 is reliable and inexpensive, you can pick up a slightly used one for about $350.00, maybe less. Just by way of how reliable & easy to maintain they are, a friend of mine in Oregon had his stainless P95 stolen a few years ago and it was found stashed in the woods, had been outside for about 6 months of rain. Everything was locked up & looked like hell, I'd never even handled one but after a day or so in oil managed to get it apart, detail clean it and the thing functions fine. Kind of looks like hell, but it goes "bang".
I've never been a fan of the Ruger semis, but I've kind of developed a liking and will probably get one.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

The only Ruger semi auto pistols I would own are any of their rimfires. Don't get me wrong, I have more than a few Ruger handguns but, they are RF or centerfire wheelguns. I've never cared for any of the centerfire semi autos.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I have a p95 for my home defense gun. I have nicer more accurate guns but the ruger runs like a revolver. You pull the trigger it will go bang. I also had some preban 15 rounders so what isn't there to like. MarkComment

save your money and buy a S&W, Glock, or a Springfield XD they are all fairly economical and far more reliable.
ruger revolvers and semi auto .22's are great but their centerfire auto's fall short of the mark.Comment

Cite your source that shows Rugers are not as reliable as S&W, Glock, or Springfield.Comment

I haven't owned any centerfire s&w autos but I have owned a glock and xd(hs2000). My ruger p95 is just as reliable as the glock, or even more so than the HS2000. On the HS2000 I had to replace an extractor, a broken grip safety spring, a broken cocking indicator and the locking block developed a pretty good size chip. Heck on my 1st cz75b I had to replace the extractor because I started to get failure to extract issues and the slide stop broke and had to be replaced. The ruger, nothing so far. MarkComment

+1. No issues with the wife's P89 and its got close to 2000 rd through it. Its our HD gun because of the high reliability (and she is used to handling it). I'd prefer the CZ75 or P228 for personal accuracy but the Ruger will feed anything (CZ has been HP friendly too...).I haven't owned any centerfire s&w autos but I have owned a glock and xd(hs2000). Because rappers and gangstas dont rap about rugers. personally All you semi autos have been Rugers. VERY reliable and a decent price. Pretty much everything else in a comparable caliber new is easily 100-150$ more.
I have a old P85 MK2 9mm and its been very reliable. I dont shoot it much anymore. it used to be my only pistol but I never had a jam or misfeed misfire stovepipe anything. ive shot against my buddies with more expensive guns Beretta XD and Sig and ive outshot them all. granted that could be as simple as I just shot better than they did but I like rugers. Very reliable and never gave me any problems. good enough reasons for me to buy another when its time.
Also ive shot Pretty much the gamut of ammo through this 9mm. Anythign from Wolf Blazer Winchester Remington Magtec etc. you name it this gun shot it with no problems. I took it and did a complete breakdown and clean up. Gun had minimal wear. This gun was a buyback from a local PD.Last edited by Rob454; 11-01-2009, 9:18 PM.Comment

Can't say I agree with this at all. I've put well over 3k through my ruger p345 and I have had exactly one malfunction which was my own dumb fault. My XD I have had 1 malfunction as well but that was not my fault, it just flat jammed. Everybody has different experiences with different guns and usually its a dumb problem such as limp-wristing it or sometimes even mechanical flaws or failures but I will give the ruger guns props for being tanks of a weapon and VERY reliable. I can't give them much else for the looks or aftermarket department though, they suck for that. My Super Redhawk is pretty sweet looking though.Comment

Because, the Govenator used a Ruger (.45ACP) P-90 in the movie "True Lies" and no one likes the Govenator right now.
There's nothing wrong with the Ruger P series, I think half the people at my work use them.sigpic

I'd be a liar if I said that price point wasn't a major factor in considering the Ruger P series. I know there are other guns that are reliable and have better asthetics (I never particulary liked the blocky look), but I hate not having a firearm to protect my wife and home if (God forbid) it ever came to that.Comment

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the Ruger P series 9mm's. I have a P89DC and love it. It's built like a tank and has been completely reliable. Not as accurate as some of my other pistols but I don't use it for shooting tight groups. Who cares if your center mass group is 4" or 2", it's still center mass.
One interesting thing I noticed in the owners manual for the P89, it's the only pistol I know of that specifically says that you can use brass, aluminum or steel cased ammo. It seems like most other manufacturers only say to use brass cased ammo.Comment

I like the Rugers P-series they're built to last but may not be as accurate as some other brands, overall I would use a Ruger with no question for self defence.
I would suggest that you try the same ammo you would use for self defence to make sure it functions at 100%, I've used 115-147gr FMJ,HP and reloads and not one hiccup."I have a love interest in every one of my films - a gun."
