my first time with a 1911...

My RIA 1911 does exactly what it is supposed to do, puts the holes in the targets every time the trigger is pulled.

Shoot what you are comfortable with and you'll be happy.

I have a Springfield Milspec I bought used a couple of years ago and it is a flawless weapon. It does have an upgraded TRP barrel because the original owner said the original barrel was defective. When he sent it to SA, they decided to upgrade him to a TRP barrel for his trouble.

In the next month or so, I intend to buy a higher line 1911 ($1000 to $1800) 1911, just to have one with some of the special features. Have not decided on a brand or model yet.

good to see more replies. if I could put more than 500 down I would but after finishing my OLL I can't throw down just as much as it cost to build. I figure I get a RIA 1911 now, maybe in a year or however long I can attempt to save I'll get a Springfield loaded. maybe my wife will want a 1911 after she gets tired of 9mm.

Something to consider with 1911s is ergonomics.

While the construction of the majority of 1911s is identical, there's a fair amount of ergonomic decisions that vary between all the brands. For example, the Springfield Loaded's grip safety really hurts my hands. The nub on it sticks out too far. The Sig's forward checkering tears up my fingers. The S&W has a slide safety.

When I put the RIA Tactical in my hand it felt better than any gun I ever picked up. It was just perfect(minus those fugly grips). So, while I love my RIA, I do think it's important to buy the one that's genuinely best for you.

I cant believe people suggesting other brands for you. RIA is a GREAT BASE model 1911. Check out the 1911 forum and they get rave reviews. Not that they are the best, but for a base model, you really cant beat it and it is in the same league as say the SAI GI45. Their customer service is just as good as SAI as well. And as Rekrab has mentioned, there are small difference between manufactures...these small differences effect the feel when shooting.

As with any gun, you should try it out...and you found you loved it. Thats the best thing in the world, dont listen to others telling you to start off with something else. Of course a Kimber, Sig, Colt is better...someone will always tell you which is better. If you came in here loving and ready to buy a Kimber Custom, everyone would be telling you to get a Dan Wesson, base model Les Baer, SA TRP, etc... If you came in here ready to buy a base model Les Baer, people would be telling you about the $ 3kWilson Tactical and the Nighthawks! It never stops. Be happy you found a gun you know you love...cause I see too many dam people buying guns just because everyone else influences their decision(as if this were jr high school).

Agreed, when i went into the store looking for 1911s locally i wanted an entry level 1911 but people will try to sell me onto something different such as the dan wesson, wilson combat, etc. if i didnt have to pay another car note i would have 3 1911s by now.

its only a matter of time. i grew tired of my glock 19 after a good year of actually going to the range to shoot. i only bought it because i wanted a handgun and people said it was reliable. i grew weary from the grip after a while and have been wanting something new with alloy frame.

My Kimber just feels right, I handled a RIA the other day, and I personally did not like the feel, the safety is not even close to the kimber, which is more confidence inspiring, yet far easier to actuate. not to mention, my allow 4" Kimber feels like it weighs half as much (even though i know it does not).

My wife has a Springfield Loaded on the way, we shall see how it compares.

i should also add, between shooting the full size GI and the tactical there wasnt much of a difference. im not sure if its just me shooting but i noticed a huge difference when shooting different sized frame glocks.

or maybe it was because i was exited shooting a 1911..

the only dislike that i had with the full size GI was i cant reach the slide release with one hand in a fluid motion, i know thats where guns smiths come in play but i might get the commander sized.
