Yup, agree w/ both. I have 4 10rd g17 mags full of JHP's and 2 mags of FMJ at the ready. But my primary is a 500a with 7 +5 rounds of "00"...

That's it. The rest is in ammo cans and not accessible for HD...

Some folks need to run to the store and buy more ammo.

My pile, let me just say if it somehow caught fire it could be seen from Space.

        rough est.
        200 12ga rounds 00buck/3" slugs
        500 .40cal rounds
        300 .223 rounds

nothing over the top but enough if I want to go out and shoot and not have to worry about not having ammo at home.

I don't like spending tons of money on 'HD' ammo. I bought one 20 rd. box of Mag-Tech First Defense and put it into my magazines. Pretty much all of the rest of my ammo cache for all calibers (pistol) is target ammo.

I have around 150 rounds of JHP of Speer Gold-Dot. There is no point for having more than that. It is just too expensive. If zombies ever show up, i will use FMJ on them.

Hundreds of rounds? Seriously? For HD? SERIOUSLY?

I've got 2, 8-round mags of 230gr +P JHP Corbon .45acp. The second mag is more for backup (I.E. a failure in the primary mag) than anything else.

Seriously, if I'm ever in an HD situation where there's enough guys that 8 rounds of .45 won't be enough, I'm not staying around, I'll be getting the hell ot of there.

Home defense is one thing, but you've got enough ammo for a gun fight. And I'd rather have a rifle for a gun fight. Wait, no, I don't want to be in a gun fight because that's just stupid.

For HD I'll take my 5 rounds of .357 (Ruger SP 101), or my 2 8-round mags of .45 (Kimber Custom II 1911). I think both will protect me just fine.

Truly for home defense, 3-4 loaded mags per gun should be all you need. SHTF, you should be loaded to the gills with all you have.

I have 2 870's loaded with 00 buck and glock 23 with extra mag and a kimber tle/rl with an extra mag for home defense. I also have some more buckshot and a couple of rounds of slugs on a side saddle and a sleeve on the stock I doubt I would ever need any more than that.

Agree, If your needing more then two mags of HD rounds, you better move from that combat zone or have a AR/Shotgun and some concertina wire wire.

I would not anticipate having to use all of this in a single incident, . This does not include my wife's stuff, nor does it include the significant "backstock" of ammunition or other weapon not generally prepped for easy access.

If the zombies come to my house I'll call on some of my friends here with lbs of ammo to help me.

I like to use Winchester Ranger for my home defense load. I figure if it is good enough for police, it should be good enough for me.

I like to keep 500-1000 rds of it on hand, not that I think I'll use that much, but so I always have a supply on hand to run a couple hundred rounds through a new gun to make sure it feeds.

For the actual GUN, I keep 1 mag loaded in the gun, and 1 loaded next to the gun in case the first one fails. That seems like enough to me - I don't need 12 loaded mags, but I do like to have a lot of the ammo so I can do all important testing of my favorite ammo through new guns. I'm not going to put ammo (no matter how good) into a gun that I may have to bet my life on without testing it to make sure it feeds and ejects properly a few hundred times.

Not counting stockpiling.......I keep my .357 loaded(7 rnds) + 1 speed loader, and I have 1 full mag in my rifle, no round in the chamber, that's it. When I get my shotgun it'll probably take the place of my rifle.

I don't think you need more than a couple of mags or speed loaders for your home defence weapon. Unless civilization breaks down, then you won't have enough.

For HD, I'd go for my shotgun loaded with 4- 00 buck and 4- 1 oz slugs. If that's not gonna stop an intruder, I'm jumping out my window!
