Ammo inventory for HD?

For my small collection of handguns (10) I have for use:

1. 250 rounds of 155 grain Winchester Silvertips in .40 S&W dedicated for home defense usage

2. 500 rounds of of assorted 9mm hollowpoints. (mostly Remington Golden Sabres and Hydra-Shoks)

3. 200 rounds of .38 Special. 75 rounds of .357 Magnum.

4. .22's, Too many, maybe 10K, but not for home defense

For range use, I usually buy as I go with only a small supply at home.

Would you feel adequately supplied? How much do you have?

For HD/SD you do not really NEED more than a few hundred rounds. Ammo that you should be stocked up on is whatever caliber your go to rifle is chambered on as that will serve you best

I'd think that 2 or 3 loaded magazines of a quality, proven-to-be-reliable-in-my-handgun JHP would be enough.

I have 8 mags for my XD9.
I keep 4 of them loaded with JHP, and 4 loaded with FMJ.

Exactly what the F are you defending your home against?? For home defense there is a loaded shotgun and a few loaded handguns...
for A ZOMBIE WAR there are quite a few thousand rounds of backup...

I'm not planning on enduring a Waco-style siege with the ATF, so I rarely have more than a couple of mags loaded respectively with Remmy 9mm hollowpoints and Cor-Bon .40 SW at home, with the rest of the ammo in their boxes (1 of each).

• Ruger SR9 w/ 3 mags of 9mm 147gr JHP hidden at the ready in "Room A"
• Bersa Thunder w/ 2 mags of .380 JHP hidden at the ready, "Room B"
• S&W 442 w/ 3 speedloaders of .38 SP hidden at the ready, "Room C"
• Springfield XD40 w/ 2 mags of .40 JHP 165gr ... easy enough to get to.
• Mossberg 590 w/ 8 rounds of #4 Buck in the tube, ready to go + 3 x Brenneke slugs and 3 x 00 buck on the stock in one particular closet
• Mossberg 930 SPX w/ 4 rounds of #4 buck in the tube, followed by 3 of 00 buck, in a different closet.

I would not anticipate having to use all of this in a single incident, . This does not include my wife's stuff, nor does it include the significant "backstock" of ammunition or other weapon not generally prepped for easy access.

1k rounds of high quality hollow point for each major pistol caliber, stored bulk in bags with what I really need to "use" in mags. The reason for 1k is not becasue I'd expect to use it, but to make sure I have a known good batch and no feeding issues (bought 2k to start with...) and don't have to worry about resupply for... the rest of my life.

Use FMJ/TMJ/whatever's cheap for training ammo.

Just a couple boxes of HD pistol ammo is what I keep and IMO that is just fine. Not going to be dumping 1,000 rounds into someone breaking into my home.

I keep more of the 7.62x39 around, which will be more useful in situations far worse than someone breaking down my door. (Zombies, China invasion, and all the other less than 1% chance situations)

I agree here. Everyone can gloat about how much ammo they have on hand, but realistically all I need are a couple magazines for HD.
