22 = High velocity. Bounces off bones. You don't know where it will exit. Too much luck involved. 9mm = slow. Stops when it hits a hard object. Not enough velocity to knock 'em over. Get a 45 and knock criminals backwards with one round to the chest.

have you ever been shot?
All you Know is probably what you read online, and we all know the internet is full of experts."There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws" From Atlas Shrugged by Ayn RandComment

Targetmasters in Milpitas rents handguns. But they make you shoot their ammo. You also have to have a second person with you, they no longer rent to a single person.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

Then anotherhorsePONY came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a huge sword. My kinda guy.Comment

Lol. Yay! I made it in time for this one!
Deagle!

Wtf .22 bounces off bones? 9mm slow? Knock em over? Have you shot ANYTHING? At least go to discovery channel and watch the mythbusters show where they try to knock things over by shooting them....Comment

still waiting for OP to post his location. did i miss it in digerprairiedog's propwash? anyways, i havent been shot by anything but paintballs and pellet guns, but based on my local sheriff's department and the CHP, i have a .40 for home defense. i think .22lr is the worst thing ever for home defense, next to a wet carrot.
OP- if youre in the san diego area, you can shoot some 357/40sw with me, if you shoot me a pm. id be glad to take a couple weapons out to the range, or to blm for some ballistics tests on produceComment

I hear a lot of complaints about that place. I'll keep it mind though.
I think the plan will be to take the pistol and shotgun classes upcoming at my local range.
Getting some chances to try different handguns might be more of a challenge. I may just buy the target pistol, then spend some time to decide on a SD/HD tool._______

thanks brother! ok, livermore guys, show our brother where it's at!! i think most respectful folk can get a couple shooting buddies from this site, so dont make a liar out of me!!
ps- as far as not renting to a single person, a lot of ranges will only rent to a lone shooter if they bring their own firearm with them. if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
if you cant figure out why, the word "suicide" kind of comes to mind...Comment

I agree...the .22 is a GREAT way to learn for a frist gun...The Mk series from Ruger was my first as well!!! No recoil to speak of so you get to learn great trigger habits (as long as you learn right
because if you do "the bad things" when shooting ti will be VERY apparent with the .22 and you can afford to shoot ALL day to get the "feel" for a handgun. Then try as many as you can, even if you just go to a store and pick up EVERY gun in the store, get one that is comfortable, that you can actually use (ie clean, store and put into action reliably) and that will be the best gun in the world. Caliber is a small issue. I second the notion that I don't care if you and a 1.2" custom super stupid gun and miss, its no better than a .25NAA..If you can hit with it reliably, that's better than having a cliber or handgun that you can't hit with reliably everytime.
