    High line 1911 .45

I have a SA 1911 .45 Milspec with a TRP barrel and a match bushing that I bought used from an out of state leo a couple of years ago and really like it.

I'm going to be coming into a sum of money as a result of a lawsuit against the county in the next couple of months and want to buy a high line 1911.

I just read WeekendWarrior's thread about buying one on a $1000 budget. There were a lot of recommendations, which just makes a decision harder.

My budget will probably be in the $1500-$1800 range and if I can buy a used one that normally sells new for more in that price range, I would consider that over a new one in the same price range.

I don't plan on competing, I just want a really good quality gun. I was thinking initially of the SA Pro and still might consider that price range. I know Hilton Yam makes the 10-8 Operator and read some stuff in that other thread about it, but don't know what they cost and couldn't find it on his site.

I just would like some recommendations from people with 1911s in that price range please. Thanks for your help.

    Dan Wesson?

I think you might be able to find Wilson Combat CQB or Les Baer TRS around that price. I have Les Baer TRS and it is a really nice gun.

I'd look for a Wilson Combat CQB also. I hear those are impossible to compare anything to.

There is a Wilson Combat CQB at Ades in Orange for $2000.

What features are you looking for?

If you like the Pro you should take a look at the Springfield Custom Carry. It falls smack dab in your budget. The CC is made one at a time by Springfield's Custom Shop, so you know it's good. Uses the same frame, slide, and internals as the Pro, and built to the same exacting standards. In fact the Pro is nothing more than a Custom Carry with features that the FBI requested.

That said, there are a few differences between the CC and the Pro. The Pro has nightsights, and extended magwell, ambi safety, Black-T finish, and 20 LPI frontstrap checkering. The Custom Carry has none of these features, it is a more basic pistol.

          Here's a pic of mine.

There's a guy selling his Nighthawk Custom Talon 5" in the classifieds ads section. Great gun.

In that price range, the Baer TRS would be the best option, imo.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

                Bill,

The SA Milspec you had is pretty sweet. I have a few Les Baers you can try at the next range day, they'll fit your budget either a TRS or Custom Carry. A Concept II if you prefer one without frontstrap checkering. Each will hold 3" guarantee at 50 yards. A 1.5" option is available.

A 10-8 Operator would be very awesome. The only person I know of to have one currently in CA is piedarc. Might want to check with him to see how he likes his.

New SA Pros aren't coming with a Nowlin barrel anymore, but I doubt you'll find one new in your price range anymore. Whether or not the Nowlin barrel matters you you, but something to consider when dropping 2.5K on a flagship pistol.

For used to fall under 2K, there's Wilson, Nighthawk, and Ed Brown to consider as well.

                Happy shopping!

What barrels are the Pros using now?

Hey Christian. No clue yet, new PROs are coming out with barrel hoods stamped NM 45.

Lots of speculation going on that it's in house, but nothings been confirmed yet.

I appreciate all of the comments, but in rereading my post, I realized I left out a very important detail. That will probably change most of your responses.

I would prefer to have an all SS pistol. I have a couple of SS S&W revolvers and really like them.

So, does anyone have any further suggestions other than jumping into a lake for forgetting that important feature.

I went to the Les Baer site and they listed the prices for all of the pistols. There wasn't anything under $2K. B Strong, did you see a used TRS or does the gun shop just discounts the MSRP a good deal.

The Wilson's were also way up there (at least on their site, which I realize is MSRP).

ETA: kamagong, I would like to have an ambi safety being a lefty, but don't care about the other stuff. I have not yet handled one with frontstrap checkering; I'll have to do that to see if I like it.

Can't somebody just contact Deb at the Custom Shop and ask her? They've always been more than happy to answer questions regarding their Pro.

If you want a SS 1911, SA offers a few Loaded ones, search around:

I love my SA MC Operator though and would highly recommend it. Out of the box its a great gun:

SA Loaded and MC Operator models will come in under your budget (my MC Operator was $1225) and you get a lot for your money. I'd suggest spending the rest of the budget on ammo since we don't yet know what the gov is going to do about the ammo restrictions.

Black Majik, thanks, I will take you up on that offer.

Ducman, I'll let you shoot whatever I get.......of course, IIRC, you have a pretty nice rifle I saw you shooting one day at Rainbow.

                              RolinThundr, thanks for that info.

I just returned from The Shootist in Murrieta. I normally don't go there anymore since they are anti-OLL and more importantly, full of FUD when it comes to pre ban mags ownership being a felony, but I had a reason.

I wanted to hold a 1911 that had the checkered grip to see if I liked it. Due to a sale they have going on today and tomorrow, they had a SA TRP in SS and Black. Both were $1545 (normally $1750 or so). Unfortunately, no money yet.

I really liked the feel of the grip, so whatever pistol I buy will have that. It will also have the ambi safety and I'm leaning toward the adjustable sights, but not sure. What I'd really like would be the TruGlo TFO sights like I have on my XDSC, due to my old eyes, but that probably wouldn't look real cool on a 1911. Any opinions on that.

They had a Nighthawk Commander for $2600, but that is way out of my range and I want a full size anyhow.

The ammo isn't really a problem for me as I'm still able to buy Ranger Talon at my old dept. range. A box of 50 is $16 and change. The Winfree FMJ is only about $13 IIRC. No, I can't buy that for anyone else, sorry.
