You need to keep it covered with a thin film of oil. I made a similar discovery recently. I've got some magazines that are so bad I'm going to refinish them.

Living on the coast is so hard.

I can tell you how to stop it 100% 1st time.

Buy the silicon gun sock either at the gun show, turners or walmart. Put your guns inside those when stored and do NOT put them in the case (they will sweat and rust).

I talked to a guy years ago who told me about this and I have completely eliminated surface rust.

Also never leave them sitting on carpet even in the gun sock as the carpet puts out some kind of fume that causes rust.

It's not herpes, it's not staff - just a little oxidation. You cleaned it off, CLP the hell outta it and don't stress to much.

Never leave it in a soft case, the material retains moisture and presses against the metal surfaces. Always keep them well oiled from now on and bring a silicone cloth with you when you go shooting to wipe them down before they go into the case.

When I store my guns I literally spray them down completely in oil. My 1911s I strip down to the frame by taking off the grips and slide, hold it over the sink, and soak the damn thing in oil. Usually this birchwood casey rust preventative and lube. Wipe off the excess, make sure not to get fingerprints on it, and put it in a silicon rag. If you have a safe, get a quality plug in dehumidifier and toss in there. It shouldn't rust for months.

I live right by the beach and it is always humid. From my experience a very wet 1911 doesn't effect function even after hundreds of rounds. Especially a mil-spec gun. It may get a bit dirtier, but thats why we clean after every outing. Just detail strip and clean the gun every 1500-2000 rounds just to get the residue out of the little places.

Oil them well and add silica gel packets in your rags. I have silica gel packets in my ammo cans since I don't get rust on my guns. My newly safe queen P229R, I oiled her up well, added silica gel packet and put her in a plastic bag.

Go to a shoe store and ask them if they have any of the silica packets that the shoes shipped with. Throw a few of them in your case-rug-whatever. Get some nitrile gloves, wear them while cleaning and oiling too. (Its a good idea if you have rust problems or not those chemicals and oils are not good for you) And then oil the heck out of every surface you can prior to storage. You should periodically detail strip your guns and wipe down the springs since moisture can accumulate in their tubes or holes as well. I personally just use a big 'ol can of tri-flow i had laying around for storage oil. Spray it on, wipe a film over entire gun with rag, into the case. If you live or shoot some where dusty and prefer to use dry lube you'll have to wipe them down again before shooting.

1st, silcon rags don't cut it. Use CLP or gun oil to wipe stuff down. Yes it will be oily but that is what prevents rust.

2nd, don't store in gun cases/boxes, and if you store in a safe make sure you air out weekly and use some sort of absorbent.

San Jose can tend to be humid. Make sure you vent your bath/shower. While taking long steamy showers is good for some, its no good for guns. Venting the bat prevent the damp humid air from being trapped within your house.

Thanks fr all the replies guys.....sounds like it aint the end of the world. I have tons of CLP for the AR's.....I guess I should put it to use as a protectant on all my guns. I like the idea of the silicon bag thingy. I'm gonna go get one.

So do you have sweaty hands? Someone else mentioned that, and yes, I've seen guns rust from sweaty hands after the guns were handled.

You guys with your "oiled" up guns.

Must be fun to watch all the wiping off when it's shooting time.

Once a gun rusts in a spot, it will always want to come back there. You
can mitigate the issue by wiping down the gun with Pledge spray Wax. Spray
it on a rag then wipe till dry. It will leave a super thin coat of wax on the
surface. It's an old Machinist's trick.

I have Colt revolver that I treated that way 10yrs ago, and the gun still looks like the day it
                        was made.

Try Eezox, it prevents surface rust very effectively. I have been using Eezox on my Remington 870 Express (which is famous of surface rusting) and it worked magic.

True. Wax can be used too. I typically put wax in the magwell and under the grips.

I dont normally while shooting...and thats probably why this never happened before. But...the day I shot it before this happened...it was almost 100 out...so I was a bit sweaty.
