    Made a shocking discovery.....surface rust.

I went to look at my 1911.....cuzz I'm weird like that. And....my 9mm and my 1911 both had surface rust on them. I last checked out my 1911 two days ago....and it had zero...nada surface rust of any kind.

I grabbed my silicon rag and vigourously wiped all that crap away....

Question is....what happened...will it return....is it a disease that will never go away...???

I took the guns out of the lock box...and put them in lockable pistol rugs.....Ive never had any incidents with pistols in the pistol rugs even after prolonged stays in them.

Im still shaken up by seeing my precious Colt with orange crap on her

Are you located near the coast? I have blued 1911's and a Golden Rod in the safe and have never had a problem. Wipe them down before putting them away. That should take care of any rust issues.

rust is like cancer...the only want to get ride of it forever is to cut it out...trying to cover up and mask it and it will return...this is from my rust experience with cars, im assuming guns are the same

25 minutes....Salt concentrations in the air here are probably pretty damn low.

                  Can we focus here...??? Lol

I need to know if this rust is going to return....anyone had a similar experience.

Salty sweaty hands in a moist enviorment could do it. You have a lockbox? Need to clean it and get some Diceent(sp) silicon packs. Where is the rust on the gun? front sights and other parts lacking a good finish are usualy very suceptiable to rust.

san jose isnt really that far from the ocean at all. plus norcal gets pretty wet at times. when you last handled it, did you wipe it off before putting it away? Was it rusty all over the entire thing or just on certain places?

Actually....I think I may have forgot to give her a good wipe down after shootin on Sunday.....it was pretty damn hot...and Im sure my hands were quite sweaty.

What Im concerned with...is what I may have started. I wiped away all visible traces...it was purely surface from what I could see. Does this type of thing strike once and stick around forever now..???

Just on the front strap....mainspring housing...and a bit on the top of the slide. No shiny blued areas affected.

Ferric dust. It's dirt from the range that oxidized. Did you leave it in a case?

It happens if you leave dirt and sweat on your guns. Most of what you saw was just the dirt. Leave it on long enough and the rust may start attacking the gun itself.

Stick a magnet in the dirt and see how much black iron it picks up. Add some sweat and let it incubate for a couple days.

You shouldn't have a problem if you clean after every trip to the range and wipe it down with a light coat of oil. I live in San Diego and don't have any problems with rust.
