Just to clarify, your father transferring a bunch of handguns to you at one time still counts against his five allowed handgun transfers, even though you can do the transfer without any FFL involvement. But it only counts as one of his five allowed transfers, no matter how many handguns he gives you at that time.

The points "reset" at the end of the calendar year.

This it what I was curious about. I'm thinking 5 handguns are 5 handguns no matter how you transfer them. I don't know how much it matters these days though. I'm sure most of us can think of at least one prolific seller. Where's the guy that will impress us with citations from the penal code or something? I won't be satisfied with an answer until somebody feeds my lazy mind some info with a reference.

Here's the section of the CPC that says you need to be a California Licensed Dealer in order to sell any firearms at all...

12070. (a) No person shall sell, lease, or transfer firearms unless he or she has been issued a license pursuant to Section 12071. Any person violating this section is guilty of a misdemeanor.
But then CPC Section 12070(b) list a bunch of exceptions to this, including "infrequent" transfers of handguns...

12070. (b) Subdivision (a) does not include any of the following:

          (4) The infrequent sale, lease, or transfer of firearms.
And then CPC Section 12070(c) defines what infrequent means...

12070. (c)(1) As used in this section, "infrequent" means:
          (A) For pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person, less than six transactions per calendar year. For this purpose, "transaction" means a single sale, lease, or transfer of any number of pistols, revolvers, or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person.
So there you have it. Less than six transactions. Each transaction can be for any number of handguns. The count is per calendar year.
