Thought this would be a good poll to add some perspective. Which handgun would you choose for a situation with no cleaning supplies, limited ammo in FMJ only, two magazines and an mountain environment.

Which Handgun For Long Term

I have fired 500 rounds out of a Sig P250 in 9mm non stop for about 1 1/2 hours. The pistol already had about 15,000 rounds through without any maintenance. I was still able to place all the shots within 9 ring on B27 target at 25 yards. I think it is a decent pistol. I have not done torture test on other firearms.Comment

Any Glock. If I had even so much as bacon grease, I might pick a Sig P210. They are a lot tougher than you think, and were designed for mountain warfare with limited FMJ ammo and two magazines.

Nothing smaller than a .44 in the mountain.Comment

The trick to all of this is the entire "no cleaning supplies" requirement. Any pistol, be it a revolver or auto, will need some kind of maintenance if it is fired for any length of time. And the fact that you also did not include a timeframe as to when you would be able to gain access to cleaning supplies and ammo means it could either be as short as 2 weeks to forever. -_-
All weaknesses of the situation aside I'd have to go with one of the following:
1. Ruger Vaquero in .45 Long Colt - A proven round and caliber to stop either man or beast in a standard 250gr lead round nose. And with a single-action platform it would encourage ammo conservation and making each shot count while bypassing most problems due to lack of cleaning. This would only be a good choice if later provisioning could be managed.
2. Smith & Wesson 325 .45 ACP - This would have the advantage of the .45 ACP in a revolver package. With moon clips reloading would be quick and the 230gr FMJ should pack sufficient punch to put down man or beast in a mountain environment. While I'm not sure how well a double-action revolver would hold up with lack of cleaning after being fired and let sit it should at least go bang for the first shot which sometimes is all that matters."People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for rule by brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically 'right'. Guns ended that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work." Clarissa in The Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith.Comment
