it might have been a tokarev tt which looks similar to a 1911. especially to the untrained eye.

Haha Im a straight up gun nut. I KNOW it wasnt a Tokarev and it was identical to my stepdads original 1911, the only thing that looked different than his were the Colt grips and a small ring near the base of the mag floor plate. I can TRY to get pics. I will call my grandpa tonight and tell him that his foreman might have a piece that is worth some money : ) Like I said, my jaw litteraly dropped when he showed me.

            This is correct.

Is this the loop you are talking about?

[This photo is from the webstore of a prominent 1911 manufacturer.]

If so, it's just a lanyard loop.
              This is my sig line.

I may not be a "straight up gun nut", I do know that the part is the main spring housing on a 1911 and the 1911A1 and 1911 did come with them.

Its a smith built gun someone probably had made up for the 18 cases of ammo he had sitting around....If the magazine shell is original Colt with the lanyard ring its worth some cash. Was the bottom of the mag marked Colt? Its probably only worth $500 or less today...

                      Lookee here:

The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I think B Strong hit a home run.

                            .45 MODEL 1911

A lanyard ring on the mainspring housing is common on the 1911A1. The original 1911 magazines had a landyard ring on the bottom of them and are hard to find nowadays.
It is not that difficult to "adapt" the .45 for a smaller cartridge. Years ago my dad fitted a barrel for .38 SUPER into a .45. He brazed an extra piece of steel tubing around the end of the .38 SUPER barrel to fit snugly inside the .45 barrel bushing. The extractor claw still grabbed the smaller diameter case.
That being said, it is not inconcieveable for a M1911A1 to be fitted with a 7.62x25 barrel and my comments are now pase'; thank you, B STRONG.

You'd figure something like that would be more popular, guess ww2 junk remains supreme.

After the fall of Chiang Kai Shek and the Chinese Nationalist Party the communists got their hands on many tons of U.S. issue weapons, and converted both 1911A1's and Thompson SMG's for the 7.62 x 25 round.

When I did the search on GB that turned up the VC top end, there was even a guy selling an adaptor to use PPSH stick mags inn the TSMG.

Interesting piece of history if you can turn one up with provenance, otherwise just another oddity.

As an aside, Colt did do a run of GM's in .30 Luger.
