I have fired both a M9 and a M40. They are very similar. I guess you really cant compare the M40 to the P228.
I would sugest to try and find a range that has one to rent or try and find someone in your area who is willing to let you shoot theirs.

The sights are dovetailed in and can be replaced with a conventional set. There is a company in Nevada that sells replacement sights. I found it on the Steyr Club boards but after shooting the gun for awhile I decided not to change them out.

seems that steyr makes a set:

Yea I saw the replacement sights. Im a little short on cash hehe. To be honest I think I have more control over the weapon with standard sights. But to be honest I havent shot a gun with those kinds of sights before. I have only put about 500 rounds through the gun and that isn't nearly enough to get used to it completly. That is really the only reason why I do not like the sights. I would trust my life on standard sights because im more accurate with them at farther distance. Up close its very controlable. For people who say they can sight in faster with the triangle, again its a matter of opinion.

I love this gun. It is as other people have said the sights, grip angle, and low bore axis make it feel very different in the hands. If you are comparing it to other makes that "different" might make you dislike it.

Try it with an open mind and appreciate the unique qualities it has to offer. I personally think the sight picture is cool and and think it would be silly to change one of the best parts of this gun.

I've had my Steyr for a few years now and have put over 1000 rounds through her without a problem. I actually had one jam in the first clip...cleared and never looked back! I have been very pleased with it so far...especially for the price. The sights did take about 100 rounds for me to get used to compared to standard 3 dot sights, but now i really enjoy using em'. Also, the Steyr was designed for the .40, then manufactured for the 9mm as well, not designed for the 9mm, then manufactured for the .40 like alot of pistols. Lastly, i live by the beach and love the finish that Steyr uses on their weapons. Supposedy will hold up to the worst conditions on the planet!

By far the best gun I own in the "Polymere" class. I like it better than my Glock, Rugers, M&P and XDs (even the XDm). If you find one, Snag it!

I'll never give up my Steyr's!

My M40 is my bedside pistol and is my primary go to for my bugout. My S40 is the secondary, and easily fits in an ankle holster.

Fantastic weapons, better than ANY Gluck I've ever shot, purely for ergonomics. The fact that I can shoot better with either of them than anything else is secondary in this matter.

8500+ rounds of .357sig(and .40s&w) w/ minimal failures. From time to time You'll read of failure to extract issues that are easily remedied by installing the updated extractor. I had this issue at about 700 rounds and since changing to the updated extractor my M357-A1 eats any and all ammo I feed it, even Rem UMC or S&B.

While the sights require that You train a little extra to become proficient w/ them they are the fastest down and dirty sights anywhere. If You can't get over the hurdle of training w/ tri-traps Trijicon makes excellent three dot night sights for The Steyr, and yes they tend to be a bit more precise, but nowhere near as fast at target aquisition.

I see them occasionally pop up at budsgunshop and gunbroker.
