    Steyr M-A1?

    Hello,

does anyone own one of these? im looking at possibly purchasing one of these in the near future, ive handled one before and it felt great but i havent had the chance to fire one before. im looking to get one chambered in .40, im just wondering what reliability is like on these pistols since i havent heard much about them. any info is appreciated.

    thanks!

I bought a Steyr M40-A1 last month and have put about 150 rounds of Wolf low power crap and 100 rounds Winchester whitebox 180 grain ammo through it. So far it has fed and ejected everything without a problem.

Even though the gun is a lot lighter than a lot of other guns the recoil feels significantly lighter, I think because it has such a low bore line that it recoils back instead of up.

It took me about 100 rounds to get really used to the sights, I think that the triangular sights are faster to get on target after you get used to them and at 7 and 15 yards it was shooting into the ten ring (about 4") standing, unsupported.

EDIT:Forgot to add, It has the best trigger of any of the polymer frame "safety tab trigger" guns that I've ever tried. The total trigger travel is less than 1/4" and it breaks clean at 5 Lbs. It's nothing like the 3/4" - 1" travel of the Glocks.

Gotta say I don't like them. Though I admit they are reliable and shoot decent enough. I put about 500 rounds through one and the overall geometry and trigger was just too much for me. This was shot back to back with a Glock 17, HK USP45f, 1911, 92fs and of all the pistols I had the most dislike for the Steyr. It was a breeze to put 500 rounds each through the other 4 pistols (well not so much with the 92fs) whereas I had to struggle to shoot the Steyr. Not saying it's a bad pistol, but to this avid shooter, it just feels wrong.

              M40-a1

I bought it 6 weeks ago, 300 rounds down the pipe. No issues.
I like it a lot and shooting it better than Glock 19 or 1911.

I picked up an M40A1 also. I like it a lot- it's all about whether the gun fits your hand, and it fits mine great. It has similar muzzle flip to a Glock 19 in 9mm, as in, hardly any at all- definitely less than some 9mm and virtually all .40 pistols I've tried.
It has a snappier rearwards recoil, but follow up shots are quick and easy. For a .40, it's an easy shooter, especially considering how light it is.
As far as trigger goes, it's not terribly consistent. mine breaks anywhere from 7.5lbs to 7lbs, but it's getting more consistent as it breaks in. I think mine had a rough sopt that's polishing out, as when I first got it, it would break anywhere from 6.5-8.5lbs. I've put maybe 450-500 rounds through mine- no problems at all, not even with a weak-wristed shooter (my GF).
It is now my bedside pistol, replacing my G17

what dont you like about them? from what ive read they are great for quick target acquisition. i havent tried one out so i cant say for sure id like it more but for a HD pistol it would be a feature id like to have.

these arent dropping off the list for 07 are they??

You just have to get used to them as they look and acquire very different from anything else you've used, which is always the simple U notch.

I found them pretty quick once I got used to how they look. It's harder for me to line up elevation compared to the U nothc sights, but the difference in point of impact (maybe 1-1.5" tops) is irrelevent for defensive use.

I think another color up front, say orange, would have helped too.

I love the sights. I wish they made the same kind with some higher visibility markings though.

Its a matter of opinion. I like the P228 much more. I guess I dont like the triangluar sights. Everything else about the weapon feels excellent. I would rather have standard sights instead. Its like someone saying they like a Corvette and someone else saying they like a Mustang.

I have fired both a M9 and a M40. They are very similar. I guess you really cant compare the M40 to the P228.
I would sugest to try and find a range that has one to rent or try and find someone in your area who is willing to let you shoot theirs.
Opinions are like A**holes, everyone has one.
