    S&W 5904

I found this S&W 5904 at a local pawn shop where it has been lingering on the bottom shelf for a couple of months. I have been moderately interested in these third generation 39/59 series Smiths for a few years but for one reason or the other never picked one up.

I negotiated with the counter guy and we settled on $400. It came with two mags and that was about it. It has a bit of holster wear, but looks almost new inside. It has importer marks and I suspect that it may have been one of those that were brought in from Puerto Rico or some other country south of the border. The serial number points to it having been made in 1988-89

Going to take it out in the next few days and see how it shoots. From all reports I have read, I suspect it will be a nice shooter.

Nice find. I recently picked up a poor man's 5904, the 915. I got it for $435 plus transfer fee. It only came with one magazine but the LEO I bought it from told me that if the magazine ruling comes down in our favor he will give me the OG 15 round magazine for it.

I don't think it came from Puerto Rico as there wouldn't be any "import" marks on it. Though PR is it's own country, as a US Territory it follows a lot of US laws, including firearm laws. They are issued FFL's from the BATF just like all other gun dealers, manufacture or collector in the US would. Same holds true for all other US Territories.
    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

2nd and 3rd gen S&W autos are great. Nice price, too.

As an aside, extractors are getting hard to find; I was looking for replacement extractors for both generations, and with a little luck and patience I found what I needed. But it took a few months to find/purchase.

I knew that PR was a territory, but somehow I thought that guns coming back into the US from there were going to be import marked. Now I just learned something new. Condition-wise, it looks like your standard LE turn in. It reminds me of the CZ75's that I got from Classic that came out of Argentina.

Thanks for the heads up on the extractors. I just found one on Ebay for $10 and bought it as a spare.

I recently acquired 2nd generation double-stack S&W Model 669 but it is 669 slide on 3rd generation 6906 frame. Hybrid tough it may be, it's a great shooter and goes well with by 3rd generation 3914 (essentially same gun in single stack form) and 1st generation Model 59. All metal S&W guns from 1970s, 80s and 90s are terrific, better in all respects than plastic successors
