    Ported barrels?

PSA has a sale on their Dagger (Glock 19 clone) slides with a ported barrel.

How effective is the porting on barrels like this?

I don’t know about the PSA porting, but can tell you from personal experience that a .40 cal Glock 22c has the same if not less recoil than a non-ported Glock 17. The down side, they are loud as hell.

I have a ported barrel on my 5" M&P CORE. I also have a non ported barrel for it. Shooting standard pressure 115s and 124s, I can't perceive any difference in muzzle rise. I do feel a slight difference with 124g NATO spec ammo but not enough to get excited about.

I use to have a 9mm Canik that was ported. Different type of port system, instead of the one long port on each side. It had three or four circular holes on each side, the difference between it and my other 9mms that were not ported was minimal at best.

The smaller and less powerful your cartridge is, the less benefit porting will give you.

I have a 3” S&W carry comp model 19, when I shoot 38 out of it. It feels pretty much the same as all my other 38/357 wheelguns. But when I shoot 357 out of it, it has less felt recoil then my much heavier 4” 586.

Basically I think porting on a 9mm is not really gonna do much and not needed, unless you are looking for ever little tiny bit of recoil reduction possible.

Well that's disappointing to hear. I have a Springfield P9 with a real honest-to-goodness compensator on the end, and it shoots very flat with standard 115's.

The weight and length of the compensator is also a big factor. Same as adding a light, more weight up front less muzzle rise/flip.

Ported barrels are great if you're into debris, gas and flames shooting up and into your face. One off the reasons Glock discount the 19C.

Just remember that you need a ported slide that allows for a ported barrel.

                  I had a ported 6" barrel on my Dan Wesson 744 Revolver ( .44 magnum ).

Then I switched to an un-ported 8" barrel. No felt difference.

Could be due to the extra barrel length.

                    It's not very heavy.

It makes for fun with the gasses blowing through the inside of the slide and down the frame.

                        The Dagger slide is vented:

I doubt that the porting is close enough to the muzzle to provide any advantage in reducing muzzle flip. Most compensators and revolver ports are close to the muzzle and at the 12 o'clock position to take advantage of the leverage of pressure pushing the muzzle down due to the ports. This one is back a bit of distance, so will lose any mechanical advantage of leverage and it is double ported; one on each side...that balances the failure.

Short barrel pistols (the PSA offering is 3.9") may need all of the barrel length to completely ignite the propellant. With the porting so far back from the muzzle (and doubled), you're almost guaranteed to have unburned propellant hitting the ports. That, along with ignited gasses will be exciting and pretty in low light. But, you're going to be injecting ignited excess powder directly into your line of sight. Not only do you lose the additional power of the unburned powder, you lose your night vision on the first shot. (You can replicate this with an unported, 4" barrel .357 magnum. The gases send a tongue of flame out the barrel, but you also get flaming gasses at 10 and 2 o'clock from the cylinder gap.)

It should be even more spectacular with a red dot sight.

I have a few ported handguns but all have the porting or comps right at the muzzle.

I recently got a performance center core M&P 2.0 that I am going to try out alongside my non-ported 2.0 and see what the difference is with the same ammo once it clears DROS.

This is by far the best porting I have ever used and it doesn't have the accuracy issues the sig Macro does past 15 yards
