1- if you have a good presentation already, you do not need to alter how you present. That is to say if when you present your front sight is inside the rear notch, the dot will be where you need it to be.
2- if you find that you are fishing for the dock, someone told me don?t look for the dock. Look for the front sight. Get the front side in the window. The dot will be there.

My Shield got the rail cut on the back end where the original site was mounted. A Holosun was mounted. Gunfighter Tactical cut it on their huge CNC machine while I waited for $175.

You?ll want to chose the gun based on what you already know about those guns. Holosun did just release an optic that sits low enough to co-witness with the standards sights of the Glock MOS pistols. It sounds like you?re thinking out loud, trying to get some general ideas. Which is great. My first pistol optic was a Holosun 507C Green Dot on a modified G19 Gen 3. It?s worked well. Ya adapter plates aren?t fun. But I suppose they allow for many different plates to accommodate different optics. That said, there?s only a few pistol optics that seem to be better than the rest. Holosun. Trijicon. It?s a short list. Bushnell, Primary Arms, Burris, Vortex, Hex, Sig?there?s a ton out there. But I prefer the first two I listed.

That's a good representation of the two versions. S&W sells that cut rail for $249. It's cut in front of the old site that remains for no reason.

Mine was cut on the rear where the original site was located. That has a couple of advantages, the Holoson is at the far rear so it doesn't hang up in a holster. You also get a longer site distance, that improves accuracy. The cost was also $75 less.

The rear sight remains for a valid reason…as a backup if the optic fails, and the stock sights that come with the factory cut slide are usable/visible through the optic. You don’t need to replace the sights that come with the factory cut slide.

Wherever you decide to place the optic, no matter if it?s in front of the rear sight or behind it, or getting rid of the rear sight altogether all have their pros and cons. I use a Tier1 AIWB holster and have not had any issues whatsoever with the optic hanging up in the holster. I also have a Holosun 508TX2 on a Glock 17 (had slide milled and the optic is also in front of the rear sight and installed slightly higher sights that allowed me to again use them and see them through the optic if it fails) and never had any issue with the optic hanging up in the three holsters I?ve used it with?two BladeTech holsters and a Safariland holster.

Just throwing it out there, there are different aiming techniques that can be used if you have a broken optic and no backup sights. Guillotine method, backplate, etc.

Any will work. Do not overthink this... If I may, just toss a die and call it a day. Same you could do, too, for the red dot itself.

I think once you try a red dot you'll be hooked. It's nice not having to deal with lining up two sights that are in different focal lengths while focusing on the front sight and simultaneously trying to center it between the rear sight notch. With the red dot as long as it's zeroed correctly and you have good trigger control the bullet goes exactly where the dot is. Target acquisition is also faster.

A few disadvantages not mentioned yet:

-Those with astigmatism have a hard time using dots, as they print a starburst image to the eyes instead of a dot. Some models help with this, like ACSS that uses a ^ as a reticle instead of a dot. Some say green color helps too.

-Some older designed dots don't have an auto-off feature. Dead battery when it comes to next range day, and many ranges don't sell batteries (ASR does, thankfully!). Life & death situation, you're using backup irons, that is, if you got 'em.

-About dead batteries, leave the batteries in long enough and they may even leak acid and destroy the terminals. Don't ask how I know this.

-Auto-on is nice, but is relatively new.

-Just about the only learning curve is getting used to how high the dot sight is more than the irons. ACSS reticle helps, and so do lower heights, especially the Leupold Deltapoint Micro, or slide cut and direct mount, but most of the time people have to *down* the gun a bit to see the dot.

-Enjoy the red dot! It's great for distance shooting.

Interesting. I have very bad astigmatism and hated the chevron reticle on the ACSS Vulcan. Love the idea behind it and the giant ring really helped with getting that chevron on target, especially when shooting from awkward positions, etc., but I just found it (the chevron) too busy and distracting. They do make the ACSS reticle with just a dot now in the smaller K footprint optics.

Regarding red dots...yes, because of my astigmatism I just see a blob no matter how much I turn down the brightness, but it doesn't matter and I don't really care. As long as the blob is on target and I'm doing what I need to do with my grip and trigger control the bullet goes where I want it to.

I really had no problem transitioning from irons to a red dot. Only thing I do different is have the front of my pistol slightly proud when pointing in and then once my support hand meets the pistol and I complete my grip and get to full extension that brings the front down and the red dot is always in the same place.

Personally, I feel that optics are like golf clubs. Some guys are zhitty golfers and think that a more expen$ive set of clubs are gonna make them somehow a better golfer. When in reality they?re still crappy golfers who just blew a grip of cash for nothing.

Same could be said about installing an optic on a handgun.
