Send slide to get cut, I recommend Slideworks Engineering, no need for an adapter plateComment

Holosun 407C.
If the slide is not milled at all, not sure how he is going to be mounting an optic. You can get precut brownells slides for ~$180.sigpic

For plinking you need just one thing - holding zero. Some of the knock-offs won't hold zero or will barely hold it (creeping) with anything but rimfire and weak 9-s.
Forego long battery life, ruggedness, special coatings on the glass, extra features such as special dot brightness levels, skip the top brands, skip the bottom of the barrel rimfire toys and you'll get into the range that will give you the "best value for plinking" (note: it's quite different from the "best value for self defense" or "best value for competition").
Some good options are listed above, but Leupold and Holosun both cost more due to being really solid optics, way above the basic plinking paygrade.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

This is what I did for G34 build on a G17 frame. Not cheap after adding a KKM barrel, Glock OEM slide internals and Holosun optic, but I use this a lot. And at any point can pop the G17 stock slide back. Have thousands of rounds through this setup, and only had to replace a defective Holosun ACSS optic. Been running strong sinceComment

I've been thinking about adding a red dot to a Glock 17/22 for a while. In the Deals section, there were two G17 gen 3 RMR cut slides on sale. One deal was $100 for a stripped Lone Wolf slide and other was $200 for a complete Florida Man slide. Tax and shipping extra.
Picked up a Holosun 507C x2. Perfect fit in the Lone Wolf slide. Have not taken it to the range yet, but it looks good.
Not the cheapest solution, but I think having a milled slide is the way to go.NRA Life Member
