9mm ideas please

I am thinking about adding a 9mm to my collection and would love some ideas. I primarily shoot Trap and have a number of shotguns. I do have two revolvers: an S&W686 Competition and an S&W 617.

I routinely reload 12G shotshells and 38 special. Not sure if I will reload 9mm but I could.

I am interested in a new 9mm primarily for HD and target. I am only interested in top quality. Not looking to get off cheap. Not looking for small or lightweight.

My only real requirement is that it comes stock with a rail for mounting a light and be available to buy in CA or shipped to my FFL in CA. I understand that limits my choices.

I don't know much about 9mm's but I have done some research and watched some review videos. A lot of the "what to get" articles say "just get a Glock 17". I did some additional digging and saw favorable reviews for the CZ75 SP-01. As of now, that is my first choice. I saw a thread below strongly suggesting a P320 but that does not appear to my available in CA so I don't understand why that was suggested in this forum.

Any other 9mm's I should consider?

Nearly Any newer off roster 9mm is better than what's on roster. Vp9, pdp, p320...There are plenty of p320s in the marketplace and if $$$ isn't a concern, then I don't see the problem.

My choice would be an SP01 or an Mk25 if I needed to stay on roster.

cant really go wrong with a glock. and for HD and target I would get a G34 to fill that role.

Otherwise, Sig makes quality pistols as well. 226 and all the variants.

This is where my lack of knowledge shows up. I don't know. I guess i will read up on that.

I do see there is an SS MK25 that is CA legal. That looks very nice. Anyone know how it compares to the CZ75 SP-01?

I should qualify my feeling about cost. I am OK buying new, higher-end gun but do will not be gouged on places like Gunbroker.

I assume "off-roster" means I would be buying from a private party? I am not really interested in buying used. Right or wrong, I sort of have a "buy only new" policy.

G17- simple, reliable… comparatively cheap… single trigger pull weight. Grip angle may not work for some.

CZ SP-01 - reliable… a little more expensive… two trigger pull weights - DA and SA… For the one on roster, you need to manually decock the trigger on a loaded chamber, unless you’re going a 1911-style locked and cock and starting from SA (but the SP-01 does not have a grip safety).

MK25 - Sig quality. A bit pricier. Higher bore doesn’t seem to work for everyone. And again - different trigger pull, but you’d always be starting from DA since there is no manual safety. You can pretend to be a “Navy SEAL”

Any of the above should work for a home defense gun.

I mostly use a Citori 725 Trap Max but sometimes my BT99. I have other, shorter 12G's for HD like an M2 and SXP Extreme Defender. Not sure why it matters in the context of this thread though.

This. I have p226 and building a p320. For abt 2.5k, you can get a new p320 full size Xfive legion if you search on here. You can take the FCU and build more variants or just add optics. P226 mk25 is a great one if you just want to walk-in to a store.

FWIW, I'm shotgunner too, primarily, I've had the G17 for years. It's about as interesting and sexy as a 2x4. Not a bad gun at all, but not anything aspirational, it's the Toyota Camry of handguns. Gets the job done, cheap and reliable. But kind of boring to many.

I also had the CZ75 SP-01, great gun. Much more interesting and cooler looking than the Glock. I stupidly sold it in pursuit of money to pay for a more expensive revolver, but the 75 SP-01 is an excellent gun and much like the Glock is an outstanding platform to build off of if you like to trick your guns out. I'm sure at some point I'll buy it again, which means I must have really liked it! If you want to spend some money, get an off roster Nighthawk, Ed Brown or something like that. The Shadow Systems guns look like an interesting high end Glock clone. And if you are fixated only on untouched guns, they do exist occasionally sold off-roster BNIB. But you'll pay.

Go to the store and see what fits your hand best.
Then go to a range and rent the 2-3 that felt best,
Buy the one you liked the best.

Capybara knew exactly why I asked that...

Browning Hi-Power is pretty sweet, or if you want a modernized high capacity version of it, Springfield makes the SA-35.

Springfield's 1911 Loaded Stainless Target is another classy choice.

If you want to spend more than $2K on it, you can get a STI/Staccato 2011 or a CZ Shadow 2 Orange.

The SIG P226 Legion or P320 AXG series are really nice.

I'd honestly rent a hammer fired gun like a 226 or any CZ as well as a striker fired gun like a Glock 17 and see what you like. Coming from shooting good O/Us the plastic striker fired guns will feel cheap and have bad triggers, however their absolute durability and reliability is nothing short of amazing.

When looking at the 320 It's important to keep the price in mind, I'm into my G35 w/9mm conversion and a ton of Agency work and optics for less than what stock P320 X5s are going for and having shot both back to back, mine shoots better. Can't take the FCU out, but you can buy a whole lot of Glocks for $2500.

Not that the p320 is a bad gun, provided you don't drop it, it's a great gun and a phenomenal shooter, just not the jumping off point to semi auto handguns I'd pick.

Gotcha. I think about getting a very high-end Trap gun someday but people do well with the ones I have. I did recently buy the garmin Xero so I could get better feedback about my misses and they aren't cheap.

I am not that interested in making a hobby out of a 9mm. I did change the sights on my 686. The ideas here from everyone are good and appreciated. Started looking at comparisons between the MK25 and the SP-01. Not surprisingly both have their fans. I don't see the Mk25 in stock anywhere but could get the SP-01.
