For people living in Southern California, if a Beretta, a Glock, a RIA, and a Kahr sit in a closet stored in their original factory case, having never been cleaned nor fired, after 10 years what's the chance that they have rust, or internal rust even if you can't see it?

Rust in Guns
Lots of factors to consider even in California like do you live near the beach or in the desert or in the mountains? Has there ever been a moisture leak in that closet? Etc.dictated but not read
Voice typing will butcher whatever I was trying to say -
Guns leave their different manufacturers in different states of long term storage treatment.
Generally speaking most of them are at least oiled, wiped down or coated with some type of anti-rust treatment other manufacturers might put the gun in a plastic bag and then into the case, that plastic bag might even be the type that inhibits rust.
Also if it's a Smith & Wesson it might have the old school brown piece of wax paper or the newer brown paper with the blue Smith & Wesson logo printed on them (that has some type of anti-rust properties).
So if you've never shot them or touch them it's going to depend partially on how each manufacturer had it leave the factory.
Basically gun manufacturers all try to make sure they can at least make it to market and be sold without being covered in rust before the customer even gets them.
The other thing as mentioned above is the environment they have been stored in.
Near the ocean with salty air is much worse than a dry desert environment.
Being in a safe with a dehumidifier or even a light bulb on to take some moisture out of the air would also help, etc.
Anyway, we now want pictures of them with or without the rust. :-)Comment

make sure to put a desiccant pack in the factory case because the foam actually stores moisture

didn't you just open a thread about this a couple of weeks ago?
Do Stored Guns Rust?
Say I have a collection of a few Glocks, Sigs [metal], Rock Island Armory, Springfield XDs, Seecamps, North American Arms, Kahrs, Tauruses, Berettas, Kimbers, CZs, Phoenix Arms, and High Points. If I touch them a couple times, then put them back in their original case for a decade, should I expect them to be rusted or should they be good as new?I started out with nothing - and I still have most of itComment

I had guns in the closet and Stackon cheap cabinets and Ak/SKS parts in a trunk in the garage for years in Eastvale (Corona). No rub downs, never rust. Now, it is so dry here in N Utah all year I keep them the same way. No rust.
Just open air or socks.
Never kept anything in a sealed plastic gun case.Comment

... Do you wipe it down before storing or stuff it in with hand sweat (and salts therein) still on the steel?Comment

I live in SF North Bay and with my experience the factory case, zippered padded cases and holsters are the worst in storing guns. If you have to then make sure all moisture from hands are wiped off with oily rag, and wipe all exposed metal even if it’s stainless steel. Don’t use WD40! Silica-Gel packs are good and treated paper like S&W use.The wise man said just find your place

depends on the factory case also. I have a 2nd Generation Colt 1860 Army that was never fired when i purchased it a few weeks ago (been fired now) its a 1970's era manufacture by Colt. It has rust on the barrel because the gun was stored in the factory box in the foam, the foam absorbed moisture and caused rust, which caused me to buy it at a deep discount in value

I live less than a mile from the beach and have had some rusting issues. I have some very minor pitting rust on an old Beretta 70s (all steal) and some very minor rusting on the takedown lever of a Sig P6. I did have major rusting issues with a Springfield XD40 and a S&W M&P40c, both of which were fixed/replaced by the manufacturer. Definitely have to keep an eye out for it....and expect to get grilled on any forum if you mention that it just happened out of the blue.Comment

Do not store them in factory cases they will rust. Store them in a safe and burn a low voltage light @ 7watts or use a dimmer. This will burn off all the water in the air and keep your firearms rust free. Can DI AR's run dirty?
