You are wise to want to learn all about maintenance, etc. You can never know too much about the 1911.
FWIW, I’ve been using Militec 1 for at least 15 years instead of other lube, oil, etc. It’s been great for me (I have no affiliation other than as a customer).
I used to ship it to a family member when he was in the Sandbox. He loved it (if you follow the directions, you can run the firearm pretty close to dry, which was very helpful in Anbar and other places). I don’t run mine dry, but it doesn’t require much. One bottle has lasted me several years.
