Shipping a firearm for custom work

I want to ship a firearm to a shop in OR for custom work. I tried to go through a gun store at the suggestion of the shop and they wanted 75.00 to ship to another FFL and another shop wanted 100.00. Since when did it become so expensive to ship a gun.

Can I send it myself? The recipient is an FFL holder, so I am not sending it to a prohibited person. It's for repairs/modifications, so I should be able to do this and have it sent back to me directly without a 10 day wait, correct?

    What would everybody else do?

If they are willing to receive it from you there is no legal reason you can't ship it. And, yes they can ship it right back to you.

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Yup. As morrcarr67 said, use www.shipmygun.com and don't worry about it. They use FedEx, and for a handgun run about $50 for next-day service.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a good service. They are closed now, so maybe you can answer my questions. They provide you a label, this should include alls shipping fees, but do I still need to declare this as a firearm when I drop it off?And where do I drop it off....

Do not use a FFL to ship for you! That will also require you to REDROS the gun for $37.19, and pay another $75-$125+ for a transfer fee, and wait 10 days to go pick it back up after you DROS again.

The law says you do not have to declare a firearm when shipping to a FFL. Company policies may require it, but you have to decide if you want to tell some counter worker that there is a gun in the box. That's how a lot of guns go missing..

You will drop it off at a UPS or Fedex Hub. You can also tender it to a driver if you have one delivering packages to you. You cannot and should not drop it off at a retail shipping store.

drop it off at a ups hub or FedEx hub. Just make sure whoever is doing the custom work ships it directly to your home and not your ffl. If they do ship it to an ffl the firearm will have to redrosed

No, but UPS and Fedex say that you have to declare that you are shipping a firearm. If you don't, then you may have a hell of a time filing a shipping insurance claim if the gun is damaged or lost in transit.

Some ffls only receive from other ffls. It is their policy not any law. Avoid them if you can.

Since you didn't indicate what type of gun you are "shipping", if it's a rifle you can send it via the USPS.
                    yourself.

But if it's a pistol, only FFL dealers can send them via the USPS.

Very good point. You could literally hose yourself sending a gun via FFL, and never get it back.

Perhaps. The notification is just verbal, and whenever I have done it, there was no record at all made anywhere that I said it. So it might be hard for them to say you didn't.

SVT got to the issue before I saw the post. As noted if it is a long gun, the best and cheapest way is using the USPS. Check the postal regs (https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm) on line for a detailed explanation.

Handguns can be shipped via either UPS or FedEx. Using either will require a trip to a hub, not one of the local mall store fronts.

The gun can be legally return shipped to your home. No need to involve an FFl or a shipping service.

FedEx hub is the way to go. You can ship directly to an FFL and they can ship directly to you at home. Manufacturers and gunsmiths all have a type of FFL that allows shipping directly to them.

Some employees can be clueless, so have the link to their corporate policy ready and be ready to tell them to bring in their supervisor (no, my name is not Karen, thanks for asking). Remember to declare it's a firearm (don't try to fly under the radar) and add insurance. It's quite easy to do.
