Sounds like all four handgun manufacturers past the testing and FN won the contract based on cost. So what’s the issue, isn’t that what we as tax payers want. All the whining over why a gun was chosen or not is lame, the fact is just about any modern service type handgun is more then capable of filling the role of a LE duty handgun. In the end it should be the one that cost the tax payers the least amount of money.

Many LA police and SD carry .45. It seems like after probation officers ditch their .40 “issue” weapons and go out to make their pistol and rifle/shotguns of choice purchases.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Doesnt sound like much of a budget crunch if they plan to equip the force with expensive electronic optical sights on their duty pistols.

All those new woke millennials joining LAPD must not be able to hit jack chit. They gotta give them guns with RMRs. Make it as easy to shoot as possible.

I have two guns with RMRs and it's like cheating compared to iron sights.

As opposed to purchasing the best quality and best performance that passes the specification tests

Do you have any idea how government purchasing works? Rarely does what is bought resemble what those who have to use the equipment have asked for. The ultimate purchasing decisions are made in rooms filled with accountants and those who never worked outside of their own office.

Low bidder construction brought us the fine roads in California that now last barely a year or two before they crumble to worthless piles of rubble.

It doesn't appear that anyone is really complaining about the choice but rather that the choice isn't some breakthrough in decision making and that for some reason just because the LAPD chose to by the FN that it means anything more than FN came in at the lowest bidder.

All this to do is a riot. You'd have thought that FN is the only gun maker who ever got an LAPD contract only because they were the low bidder.

When an agency purchases/authorizes a different weapon system accessories (holsters, training, warranty service & etc) also are factored in.

Sometimes when a "standard" product doesn't meet guidelines (like SWAT) a "special needs" justification proposal is written up and sent up the chain.

None of this is relevant, the FN passed every test LAPD put it through. Meets all of the qualifications and performs as well as any other guns tested and came in at the lowest price end of story. The accountants made the decision all by themselves, all the rangmasters and armorers doing the testing and evaluating had nothing to do with it, just shot 100,000 rounds or more through four different make of handguns for the hell of it.

So what are the reviews on the FN509 that make it so questionable?

How an "unsafe" handgun gets picked up for duty use for the largest PD in CA is beyond me....

Oh yeah, our retarded laws are just that,....retarded.

                              Couple of questions.

LAPD is still allowed to carry guns?

Was there something wrong with their existing guns? Were they used up, shot out, or in any other way unserviceable? Did the existing guns have an inordinate number of rounds through them? Is LAPD shooting so much that they're wearing out their guns?

Or is this just another vanity move by a police department to get some shiny new toys at taxpayer expense?

And what's going to happen to all of the existing guns, will they be destroyed so they don't fall into the hands of children and miscreants, or sold onto the black market where they can continue the scourge of gun violence plaguing this state?

                              Think of the children!!!

I sure hope these new guns have microstamping technology incorporated.
